Panthers Sign K Graham Gano to Four-Year Deal

To be fair, he was arguably a top 5 kicker last year.

Top 10 yeah but not top 5. Don't get me wrong. I love the signing but giving that much money to an unprovenn player at a position that is so mental scares me. It's different than say Mike Mitchell or Tedd Ginn who exploded here. This is a position where all the talent in the world doesn't mean squat if you don't have it 100% together between the ears.(see Mason Crosby)

People forget how we got this sudden top 5 kicker in the game. That's because Washington dropped him. Because he was Olindo Mare bad for them. I hope he's past that because it makes the team better but I will never feel comfortable giving 4 million dollars a year to a guy who's job is 80% mental.

To those complaining that he is making too much. I greatly disagree. Kickers win and lose games which can be the difference between making the playoffs or watching a Saints playoff game. Not to mention they win super bowls . Anybody remember a certain fg made against us in 2003 super bowl? Gano is a tremendous signing. Glad he's back. Great kicker and from what I can see, a great guy . Now if you would rather have cheap, I hear Olindo Mare is available.

And what you fail to realize or mention is that it was widely known that the Redskins field was in horrible conditions and one of the toughest fields to kick on. http://www.derp/2013/10/29/5041852/graham-gano-panthers-kicker

Hate it. Hate it. Hate it.

Kickers aren't consistent from year to year. That's just math, and you can view the evidence in the chart in this link. Since kickers aren't consistent from year to year, it's almost impossible for a kicker to live up to a long-term contract that pays above the league average. So now we're locked into a four year contract that will probably only be worth it for two of those years, and the Panthers current cap situation is a case study for how those deals can screw teams over.

and most were cool with it as long as we could keep kasay. oye. sometimes you've got to move on from a team icon when the cost well exceeds the level of talent. just make sure you replace that icon with someone that doesn't crap the bed (mare). the only thing worse than losing a  favorite is watching their replacement suck.

btw, this contract is so much better than the on  we gave mare. i mean it may be more, but we gave mare his contract before we realized how bad he was. gano is much better than anyone could have thought or hoped for. dude realy helped us and earned that deal.

What was Mare, 38 or something?  The fact that we have a solid defense and want to establish the run makes him a real weapon.  Get the ball inside the opponent's 40 and you have a shot at 3 points. No kickoff returns.  Pretty awesome.  Heck, if he wins us 2 games a year, he is worth more than what we paid him.

Heck, if you consider how many yards he saves us with his range and by eliminating kickoff returns, he impacts field position.

"sometimes you've got to move on from a team icon when the cost well exceeds the level of talent."  --- every successful NFL frachise has this in common.  Well said.
