Panthers, Hardy talking long-term deal

I think I prefer the franchise tag for hardy. Hate to commit that kind of money long term to a guy coming off one really good season. I think hardy is really good but would like to see him do it again before committing that kind of money long term. Also cool with the possibility of a trade that could come with the tag.

I agree 100%.  You don't buy stocks at their peak.  Last season, Hardy was very fortunate to have faced weak LTs, rookie LTs, and second team LTs.  He did very little vs. the established LTs.  He was streaky.

I want him on the team, but I do not want him at top dollar.  Give me a solid LT and a good CB and I will go with Alexander, Addision, and Horton and draft a DE.

We need to start a rotation where we have only 1 DE on the roster on a second contract at one time.  Spending $26 million at one position is not good.

Agreed.

I love Hardy's play on the field. So, I am torn over this situation. Given a salary cap and CJ's already big number, I am nervous about locking up a ridiculously high portion of our cap in the DE position.

I will trust Gettlemen to make the right decision.

Well schefter just reported that the cap is increasing to 140 next year and 150 the year after so we may have some wiggle room here

if it's really 12 to 14 mil per year, let him walk or try to move him.

that's absurd. we can't afford it. bigger fish to fry.

Agreed.  Hardy is a monster and we should try everything we can to keep him, but don't let the one guy set our franchise back because of an enormous contract when there's other things we have to do with that money.

That being said, HOLY poo don't let this be a Peppers 2.0 situation where he walks and we get NOTHING... well basically nothing.

Again I say, try everything we can to keep Hardy.  He's a pretty cool guy, and good player.

But the DEs were productive and Hardy is just coming into his own.  Lumping them in with the running backs is apples and oranges.

They're both occupying big cap figures at the same time. Thus make it hard to sign other players. Irrespective if either is productive. There is no franchise WR and LT on this team. Very important positions. Remember, that defense was on its heels against good teams last year. I don't think we give the offense controlling the clock enough credit.

Do your homework and get back with me.  William's cap is 6 million which is not a huge number,  Stewart is 4.6 million.  Their salaries are even smaller.  Sure they could be smaller but 10.6 million is much less than Johnson's counts himself and together only 8% of the cap combined.

And no we were not on our heels against good teams, we actually won the time of possession battle against most teams and we played against more top 15 defenses and top 15 offenses than any other team in the league.

Too many drama queens around here with their doom and gloom prophesies.

One hell of a hometown discount haha

If its over 10 trade him. I think Addison & Alexander can fill the void personally. Star & KK will be better to help aid the loss of a hardy. I'm tired of being in cap hell. I we pay him where right back in it.

I'm not sure if there's a way for a team to perpetually be under the cap under the new CBA while being able to keep their team together long term.  Not until players realize if they don't bring down there salary demands they're going to be replaced by a much cheaper younger player who can still produce. There's just such a chasm that exist between rookie contracts and top tier FA contracts.  It will eventually force the market price down, but until then you're going to see a lot of turnover and shuffling.  Seems like under this it becomes much more difficult to keep a team together.   One good season and every starter that has an expiring contract wants more money while the draft kicks out players that are just as good for peanuts.

I think the conditions are right to see an increase in the releasing/not resigning of top tier players because of their contract demands.   In the past 1st round picks were more of a risk and just as expensive which gave FA's a lot of bargaining power.  Now though I expect to see a purgatory of unsigned high priced FA that go unsigned because they're not decreasing their cost proportionally to the rookie scale.  That's when they'll break down.

I think most agents know this....so they're trying to get while the gettin is good.
