The Much Anticipated Stirs 2nd of 3 Mocks

Post Combine, Pre FA

 

We are in tough shape on the OLine and Smiths future in the air.  I expect Gman to get a couple one year deals for OT's like Stewart from the Titans

 

Anyway, here goes

 

 

1.  Houston  takes Clowney

2.  St Louis takes Watkins (Fisher has never taken an OT in the first round ever as a head coach) pairs Austin with Watkins

3.  Jacksonville  Manziel  (tries to generate excitement in Jax)

4.  Minnesota (trade from 8 spot)  Bortles (gets ahead of the Raiders for the guy they like the best)

5. Oakland  Bridewater--the most pro ready QB that can step right in to an offense

6. Atlanta Matthews  Atlanta make sure that Ryan stays upright with the better pass protector

7  Tampa  Robinson OT

8  Cleveland--Mosely Best ILB in the draft made it easy to trade down for Cleveland, especially since it is rumored that they did not like any of the top 3 QB's.  Ray Farmer said he know which QB they wanted already.

 

26 Cleveland  OBJ  Since Watkins went to the Rams, the Browns looked to trade down and now nab their WR

 

28 Cleveland sends pick 35 and 71 to the Panthers to get back into the first round and select Derek Carr QB

Carr has the strongest arm of any of the top QB's and is also very fast.  The Browns come back into the end of the 1st to get ahead of Houston who still needs a signal caller.

 

Now to the Panthers draft

 

2A. From Browns.  Panthers liked Cooks and OBJ, but both were gone before 28, so they take the best WR available in

Jordan Matthews WR

 

2B.  Since Gman bought a couple FA to hold down the OT positions, the Panthers pick Jack Mewhort OT who could possibly start by midseason.  The top flight guys were gone in the top 10

 

3A. From Browns.  Carolina runs a lot of zone, so the press corner star is not needed, but height is, so they pick Keith McGill CB who showed very well at the combine.  McGill was always a safety, and just started playing corner instead of the other way around for most guys, He has a high ceiling, especially with pro coaching and can only get better.  The Panthers lost a lot of jump balls last season and with the Falcons and the Saints, we had to go big.

 

3B.  With Smith gone or going in the next year, the Panthers select a guy who can play the slot or Smiths old positiion in Robert Herron WR.  Herron lit up the Senior Bowl and made believers out of many.

 

4th  Justin Britt OT is 325 and will challenge Bell right away for the RT spot.

 

5th  Arthur Lynch TE is not a speedster but can do all things TE well.  Will be good to run 2 TE sets with him

 

6th  Tre Boston S  can definitely add depth to our Safety position and take over in a year or so, he had a great combine, so I am a bit worried he won't still be here in the 6th

 

7th Ethan Westbrooks DE West Texas A&M  Small school guy who really got noticed at the EW Shrine game.  IN 2013, he had 19.5 tackles for loss, 7 sacks, 10 hurries, etc.  With the Hardy situation, I wanted to slot someone in our DE rotation since it is very important to keep pressure on the opposition QB's in our system.

 

Trades are always important and I tried to give a scenario with which one might occur, also, as we know, this thing will get blown out of the water once FA starts, Hardy stays or goes, Smith stays or goes, etc.  Will do one more a couple days before the draft.

I dont believe that Carr will be on the board that long. Not sure why people doesnt believe that Tennessee or Arizona could be potential landing spot for him. Both teams are desperate for a QB of the future and if Carr is really that good, no way they would pass him up.

 

I also dont see Minny trading up for Bortles when they could simply sit at no8 and take whichever one falls to them.

 

Again, this is another Mewhort and tall corner (McGill/SJB) mock draft. I am really thinking that Carolina fans are playing around with themselves with the whole Seattle trend. I dont see it happening. There's much better corner that I would take over McGill/SJB. I'm not sure if Mewhort blew it up at the combine or not. I will have to go and rewatch the OL combine, and see why so many huddlers are bringing up his name.

 

I love Robert Herron tho! Kid is a playmaker.

Love the Car picks. Mewhort is a heady professional and team captain for one of the best programs in college football. One of his adjectives includes him "breathing fire" and a weight room warrior. Gotta love that. He can also play any position on the OL so I really like his versatility.

Any of the WRs that graded out to be first-second rounders would be fine with me and at this point I really like McGill who has height, speed and all the measurable a to excel in our defensive scheme. I want that CB that makes a QB throw a perfect pass and not just lob one over the heads of our shirt Cbs and one who can also play physical face-up. Gettleman says he wants size and speed and McGill is definitely that guy.

For those hating on Mewhort, I just don't get it. Maybe it's a racial thing or something. And drafting a big physical Corner in McGill or SJ-B is just what the doctor ordered, not just a copycat thing...these guys can go up and get it with great range. I've had enough of drafting cover guys that have nothing but speed because we've wasted countless draft picks on those guys with little or nothing to show for it but a bunch of long touchdown plays by our opposition.

As far as LT prospects go, the big three will be gone within the first 10-12 picks.  Martin will also be gone by pick 28, so with no great LT or WR at 28, I chose to trade down and pick a WR in Matthews who represents good value at 35 rather than 28.

 

At 60th pick, I could have taken another receiver, but when looking at Mewhort, who can become a good/great LT, and has faced great competition, I felt like he would be a good pick.  And besides, what is left except a lot of big guys who are more suited to the RT position?

 

Have you paid attention to the size of the Falcon and Saints receivers?  Brees killed us in the dome by lobbing extremely accurate passes over our guys, who were I might add playing them very tight.  It was not bad coverage, but just tall against short.  McGill, I think, can be very good, especially in our zone.  Remember, he has played Safety most of his career and then made the difficult switch to CB

 

Robert Herron will probably not last to the end of the 3rd, but I was hoping.

 

Britt, I do not think can be a great LT, but can handle the RT position for a long time.

 

Coming out of the draft with two OT's, one CB, two WR's, a TE and possible surprise player at DE worked for me.

I think we have a lot of young CB's, very young, that will get better and there was no need to draft 2, just one guy that can help our matchups.

Matthews is the more polished pass rush defender and going to Atlanta, they chose Matthews to keep Ryan alive, which was tough on them last season.  More upside for Robinson, but immediate help fending off the pass rush tipped to Matthews

I can live with McGill in the 3rd round, but he wouldnt be my first option. He's better suited for Seattle than here in Carolina.  He's more of a press man corner than zone guy. We wouldnt be doing him a favor by drafting him.

 

McGill tend to play too far off his man. He's not a physical corner, struggles to get off blocks, lack the effort to tackle, and doesnt play the run well. However, McGill does a good job playing the ball in the air, and showed at the combine that he's pretty fluid.
