What part of that is not comprehendable? Are you to replace more than he produced?

You need to understand that players' production drops as they enter their mid thirties. That really needs to sink in at some point.

Who will we be able to bring in for cheap that'll be able to put up 745 yards while being the teams only receiver?

Smitty always went up against the other teams number 1 corner, and that's what you're forgetting. We have NO ONE that takes the attention off Smitty. At his age it is ridiculous that Carolina is asking him to still do this. If they brought in some actually receivers and moved Smitty to the slot, I truly think Smitty has good season left in him.

We can ask Smitty to take a pay cut but Gettleman went about this completely the wrong way and I think that ship has sailed. Even if we draft WR's in the 1st and 2nd rounds we'll need someone that can be relied on.

Who could you bring in on a 3-year deal for $23 million (the remainder of Smitty's contract) who could average 745 yards per season?   Come on.

The point most people are making is that Smitty needs a drastic pay cut to eqaul his production.  When you say, "to be the team's only receiver"---nobody is suggesting that we do not bring in youth.   I agree that we could get 2 more seasons out of him in the slot, but as a #1, he is done and should not be paid like one.

I want him back, as a slot WR at about $3m per season.  Draft a stud and maybe sign a veteran.  McNutt, King.  We should be set.

Gettlemen and RIvera need to learn about handling legendary Panthers.  That is not to say they are wrong.

I've said all of this before but ill say it again. What they're asking him to do is unfair. At his age, it should have never come to this situation. If they are evaluated him as a number 1 WR that's stupid.

It's been clear since the 05 playoff game in Seattle we need to get Smitty some help. And since 05 they have failed and haven't taken addressing the WR position seriously.

I agree Smitty needs to take bit of a team friendly pay cut. But to act like it would do the team better by cutting him is dumb. King and McNutt aren't the next great WR tandem and aren't a solution to this problem, they're number 3 and 4 WR's AT BEST.

They should be drafting WR's in rounds 1 and 2 this year (most likely going to be BPA at the time) would love a Robinson/Moncrief combo or OBJ/Adams and move Smitty to the slot. Cam still needs that "go to" guy on big plays.

It would be interesting to see which WR's that are available in free agency could be put into Smitty's role last season and produce 745 yards. Doesn't seem like much but you're still not accounting for the fact that defenses game planned for Smith. Smitty always had the number 1 corner on him. Look how poorly the other WR's performed when Smitty was out.

Why do you insist anyone said that the team would be better by cutting him?  Nobody said that.  I said he is underperforming his contract and is not worth the $$ he stands to make between the ages of 35-37.

Try not to put words in others' mouths so you can argue against them.

46.5 yards per game x 16 games = 745 yards in a year.  I believe we can find that for under $7 million a year in salary.

I <3 Smitty, but we cannot afford this.  You guys act like this is our country's new magically affordable healthcare plan where $$ just pops out of the ground.

People are saying the money saved from cutting him would be better for the team. And Im saying if he takes a bit of a pay cut he's worth to keep around.

But you also think King and Mcnutt are part of the solution so we'll just have to agree to disagree.

They are PART of the solution.  I also said sign a free agent WR and draft a WR in addition to cutting Smith's pay to making it align with his production.  Sounds like a pretty solid plan, if you ask me.

Tell me what you know about King and McNutt that tells you that they are NOT part of the solution?

Since you're the one claiming they are part of the solution when they haven't done poo in the NFL you tell me why they are PART of the solution.

From what I studied of King before the draft last season I wasn't much of a fan. I view him as a poor mans Ginn.
