The way I understand it, people, is you don't "tag and trade".  A non-exclusive rights tag means that Hardy has to shop himself and agree to terms with another team--the Panthers don't have any control over it.  If they agree, they have to come to terms with the Panthers, surrendering 2 first round picks, (or less if it is agreeable).

 

That is what I would do, but Hardy has already expressed happiness with the franchise tag designation, so he may not shop himself.

 

This could mean they are going to find money to lock him down long term, which would inevitably mean that Smitty will have to drop big bucks or be cut.  There is just not many places to find $$ going forward, and his deal, as is, would pay over $20m over the next 3 years.  Cutting him would save $1 m this year, however, so the impact would not be immediate.  That is the way I understand it, anyway.

 

To "tag and trade" we would have to sign him to a new deal and trade him to another team, thus nullifying the tag status.  This is hard because the contract would be void of guaranteed money, unless the Panthers want to eat some of the contract in exchange for draft picks.

Also, I heard from another local writer that knew Gross was retiring but decided not to write about it, instead letting Gross do it himself. There is something to be said for that.

The only reasons I see us tagging Hardy for is either a) They are working on long term contract with him right now and just tagging him for temp to make sure he doesn't go on to the FA market next month. b) We are tagging Hardy and preparing to trade him to another team right now. I just don't see us tagging him just to keep him one more season and then let him walk next season. That would be stupid. We have was to many needs to be filled for us just to use 60% of our cap just keep Hardy around one more season. There has to be some reason behind this long term. I'm hoping we find out with the next few days to week from now before FA begin.

What? Person and Jones don't have an inside person beyond getting the "scoop" from the PR guy throwing them a bone before the official press release is released.

Voth and Gantt have been covering this team for a decade plus and have built up relationships with guys for far longer than the two bozo's at the Disturber. I would trust their sources before the beat guys.

 

Read what I wrote. We hardly see JP/JJ break any stories; I'm not arguing against that. I'm sure JJ/JP have some "sources" inside the team but none of them have the type of leak Gantt had. But like Zod pointed out - Voth works for himself and he has more digging ability and less accountability than the local beat writers. With that being said, Voth (and all the freelance guys) are still "journalists" and they can't go around throwing sh1t to the wall hoping it sticks because they still have to be ethical, have integrity, and most importantly they DO have reputations to maintain if they want to be taken seriously.

Seven draft picks and probably another seven players off the practice squad and IR means we only need to sign seven of those guys we lost to free agency or go get cheaper or better players rather than resign some of last years guys like ginn mitchell etc.

Honestly gettleman will be expecting quite a few of these guys like mcnutt,king,bond,kugbila,smith, jasper and others to make a step up to replace what's left.

Voth has a lot of reason's not to post garbage and only post information he has a solid lead on. Not even counting the fact that he's a journalist, he's got other reasons. I'd definitely say that Voth isn't throwing stuff on the wall to see if it sticks.
