Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

If i have to choose between Smitty and Gettleman, Gettleman is out.

Then you obviously want to lose.

Smith is still a good player probably not worth is contract though.  His production is on the decline yet still very productive if he was a number 2.

Gettleman was referring to wanting to move away from Steve Smith being the number one receiver and reducing his payroll.  If that means Steve would rather go somewhere else then accept his new role so be it.  Make sense considering Smitty is almost 35 and he finished the season with a knee injury.  If he hasn't lost a step before...he has now.  It's tough to bounce back easily at 35 from a knee injury.

It's hard to hear for Steve and the fans....but the truth hurts and it's the truth.

This is why Dave Gettleman is the perfect man for the job because he doesn't have deep emotional ties to the players, and he's a great at evaluating talent.  I'm sure David Gettleman wouldn't say this because there's anything personal....but I'm sure he's scouted Steve and he's got the best interest in the Carolina Panthers in mind and quite frankly he answered the question he was asked honestly.

Steve's had a great career and he'll be pretty productive for as long he decides to play.  But he's not 2005 Smitty anymore.

I would hope that he will have a 1k season, but I just cant see it. He took a major step back and looked like an old guy running out there on the field last season. I think he'll look even older next season.

He still had 745 yds last season, With Cam developing as QB and drafting of WR /OL  we will have a improved offense, especially in the run game that opposing defense will have to respect. This will open up the passing game and the drafting a WR in 1-3 rounds will allow Smitty to move to the slot and let him have more 1:1 match up.

I'm betting that the 2014 Carolina Panthers are going to be a balanced team on both side of the ball  Top 10 Offense & Defense.

Gettleman is still evaluating, so why does your tone sound like Smitty being forced into a new, even more diminshed role is a fait accompli? The truth is is that Smitty has been ready to accept a new role for years.  He said as much a couple of seasons back.  So, in essence, his new role has already begun. The beef is really not about his role. The issue here is treating an icon with the organization with the respect that he deserves by giving him a heads-up out of the public eye.  It's no surprise that he is a little perturbed by that, and anyone who really knows Steve Smith should have known that. Even still, I'll give G-man (and Rivera) a pass because they probably didn't truly think about that before they made their comments. Moreover, as a respected Panther---probably Panthers fans' favorite son of all time---you can hardly blame some fans for being upset and emotional with the situation.  With a little time and some damage control, hopefully everyone will be able to move happily forward whatever the case may be.  The FO will smooth things over, Smitty will calm down, and fans can take pride in knowing that Smitty is handled with the respect that he deserves during the sunset of a legendary career.

i guess it is still a learning process for G-man, which is why I don't give my undying devotion and trust like many here do.he is going to make mistakes and his way is not the best way it is just his way.some things to like and some things not to like.this is one of those things not to like.

In a perfect world.

If my tone seems like Smitty is going to be forced into a diminish role then you guessed right.   We need some of the money back on his contract.  His production and projected production isn't congruent with what he's making/going to make. I didn't hear Rivera or Gettleman say they were releasing Smith...just that he's part of an "evaluation" process moving forward.  Seems like a lot of people are somehow mistaking the word "evaluation" for the word "release".....including Smith.

It's not like DG and Ron Rivera came out with a premeditated public press conference revealing their plans about Smith.  They were asked about it and they answered the best they could.  Smith shouldn't feel slighted because management answered truthfully. He's been treated like a King his whole time in Charlotte and he always will be.  In irony after hearing Smith PUBLICLY voice his displeasure with his bosses...I think he might have dug his own grave which is unfortunate considering he could have given ol Riverboat a call on the ol tele.
