Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

Spoken like a fan...and not a GM.

You do NOT pay big salaries to players that ar not performing up to that level just becuase of past team equity.  That is the recipe for disaster.  Excellent teams (Patriots for example) know when to let players go and when to invest.

I hope (really hope) that something can be worked out.  But, if SMitty will not take a paycut....I would venture to say that there is a very good chance Smith is a cap casualty.  It is just how the salary cap environment works.

So, what's the problem. All your talk is interesting but in the end Smith will play for the Panthers this season.cap casualty? not a chance.

We would be better off spending the cap space on a younger WR....not an aging one who has fallen off the past few years.  He is NOT the same player he was 5 years ago.

In a salary cap environment....it pretty much does come down to the numbers.

I'd say he is pretty close to what he was 5 years ago. also 2011 and 2012 were good years so one year dip is not a trend and you don't throw away your best receiver over one year.it's all about the numbers .Come on GM genius do some DD before you pronounce Steve smith a Casualty.

we are better off keeping SS and drafting a young WR or two and let them learn from him.

You just lost what little credibility you had.  Smith is no where near the WR he was 5 years ago.

Yes, he is the best WR that we have on the roster right now.  But Gettlemen has to weigh performance vs. cost in the tight cap position we are in.

His numbers have been dropping steadily over that period....he does not have the same explosiveness.

I LOVE Smith and hope that something gets worked out.  But, based on our cap position, other moves (Hardy, Cam, and about 20 other FA's to sign) I see very little way Smitty will play under a contract that is paying him $7M+ per season right now.

no DD still.LOL. I would say the trend shows he will go back up for 2 years.

Wow talk about overreaction, we had to wait a dam year to hear gettleman say cam was our franchise qb, until he did we all expected him to look to build around another guy, all he said was smitty was part of the evaluation wel fug me for evaluating what talent he has on the roster, it's my like that's his job as gm, both he and Rivera have not said they don't want smitty back or he will not be back next year, total overreaction from media who are twisting the story and fans.

"Yeah you are over reacting and yes it is his job as GM to evaluate the talent on his roster. However, one would think that you would show more respect to someone like Steve Smith. Much the same as he should respect to Jordan Gross by speaking to him and then announcing before the press that it would be his choice but he did ask Gross to let the team know before the draft, or something similar to that anyway. Steve Smith deserves that same respect. The man has carried this team for years. He should've had to hear it in the press that the team is contemplating going in another direction and or moving on without him. The overreaction is on your part, not mine."

I don't think that's out of the question, especially if he moves to the slot... we all thought Steve was done after 2010. I could see him having at least one more 1,000 yard season, especially if we have some other receiving options and go a tad more pass-heavy.

I dont think anyone thought Steve was done in 2010. We all knew Jimmy sucked balls tho

But in fact he is worth that based on the fact that we have absolutely no replacements at hand, and his guidance and team leadership is what makes him invaluable to us as an organization. It comes down to more than just the numbers.

Half these fuging idiots think talent alone wins games. Buncha yes men, rubber stamping the poo out of anything Getts does.

And many of you fuging idiots think it is smart to pay elite $'s to aging players....just because you have their jerseys and they are your favorite players.

Smitty is not the same player he was....and is NOT earning a $7-8M per year salary.  To pay him that with the other issues we have would be stupid.

Do we keep him or let him go....not for me to say.  But, I think there is a real good chance that he is a cap casualty if he won't redo his contract.  The NFL is a business....and most of you don't have the business acumem to run a lemonade stand in your driveway.
