Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

Johnny Rockets

That ain't Hurney that's Gettleman. Actually the team and the results achieved last year were more Hurney than Gettleman.

Let's see on defense, Star, Short, White, Lester, Blackburn, Klien, Mitchell, Cole and Mikell.

Defense was a big reason the team went 12-4 and a large reason the Defense was so improved was those picks/signings. All Rivera/Gettleman.

Charles Johnson

Greg Hardy

Thomas Davis

Luke Kuechly

Those were the guys that allowed those players you named to contribute. It all starts with those 4.

Not to mention Cam. There is no way Gettleman would have ever drafted Cam and without him we are 6-10 at best.

I think its fine.. its just how the new GM is doing business. Its just confusing the players. Steve will be back.. but what I hate is this situation right now in the media has now reading "oh steve smith is done.. nice career time to hang up"

no fuging way. steve is a gamer and will have some strong ass plays this year.

steve is real so he will tell you how the talks are going or not going.

I meant the cap challenged situation we're in now means we're really limited in FA. Without the RB contracts and Beason resigning we'd have a lot more cap space to work with, tagging Hardy wouldn't even be a question, we could go after mid market free agents instead of 1 year band aids. But you're right, whether or not Smith is overly sensitive, its Gman who pissed Smith off and hasn't done anything to explain the situation away. I don't blame him for wanting Smith to be aware that he's not guaranteed a permanent roster spot, but the way the whole thing was handled sucks.

Betrayal?

This is why most fans would make terrible GM's. You allow your fanhoid and emotions cloud what is an obvious business concern. Snitty's current performance is NOT, NOT, NOT worth $23m over the next three seasons.

Gentleman is a businessman. Mark my words....Smith either takes a paycut or he will be a cap casualty. And...in that case, cutting him woukd absolutely he the right business decision and the best thing for the long term success of the team.

But in fact he is worth that based on the fact that we have absolutely no replacements at hand, and his guidance and team leadership is what makes him invaluable to us as an organization.  It comes down to more than just the numbers.

No one on the Panthers' side is trying to smooth these comments over, despite how big it has gotten. This was deliberate, folks.

Gettleman knows what he's doing. Or he thinks he does. let's hope hes right.

Pretty much what I've been saying, they would have contacted smith or returned his agents calls if there wasn't anything to this.

Good years?

His performance last year was NOT worth the avg 7m that he will receive. It is that simple.

And, I will gladly take that bet. How much money are you willing to wager?

That touch down catch in the playoffs alone was worth 7 million. lol

The dude's been laying it all on the field for us for over a decade.  The equity he's built is far beyond his contract.

Spoken like a fan...and not a GM.

You do NOT pay big salaries to players that ar not performing up to that level just becuase of past team equity.  That is the recipe for disaster.  Excellent teams (Patriots for example) know when to let players go and when to invest.

I hope (really hope) that something can be worked out.  But, if SMitty will not take a paycut....I would venture to say that there is a very good chance Smith is a cap casualty.  It is just how the salary cap environment works.

We would be better off spending the cap space on a younger WR....not an aging one who has fallen off the past few years.  He is NOT the same player he was 5 years ago.

In a salary cap environment....it pretty much does come down to the numbers.

WOW, everyone's been patting Gettleman on the back for what he's done thus far and rightly so. But he/his staff is seriously lacking in respect. For him to make those comments and to answer those question in the press BEFORE speaking to Steve Smith is a huge let down to me.

#89 is all grown up and is still in the building! I hope he stays in the building...

Wow talk about overreaction, we had to wait a dam year to hear gettleman say cam was our franchise qb, until he did we all expected him to look to build around another guy, all he said was smitty was part of the evaluation wel fug me for evaluating what talent he has on the roster, it's my like that's his job as gm, both he and Rivera have not said they don't want smitty back or he will not be back next year, total overreaction from media who are twisting the story and fans.
