Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

I'm sure George Seifert was thinking the same thing when he cut Steve Beuerlein.

Beuerlein wasn't cut for performance reasons.

Beuerlein was cut because Seifert knew he could never justify starting Jeff Lewis with Beuerlein on the team.

Turned out Lewis was so bad he still couldn't justify starting him even with Beuerlein gone.  Hence, we got Weinke.

(this story has been oft discussed by guys who were on the team)

I think this sends the wrong message to our own FA's when our FO is this noncommittal to a player currently under contract. Not to mention potential FA's we may target at a later date. Pair this with a player like Gross now retiring, this makes our organization look dysfunctional.

What is this?  Bizarro world?

BEING UNDER CONTRACT *IS* A COMMITMENT... FOR *BOTH* SIDES.

Apparently not since our GM, and head coach are being pretty vague about his future here. Also, being under contract does not mean that the team is going to keep you around for the entirety of said contract, otherwise teams in the NFL would look quite different right now.

No, it doesn't mean they have to "keep you around".

But it does hold contractual obligations that they must meet if they choose NOT to keep you around.  And that is just as much part of the commitment as "keeping you around".

Management is management.

Players is players.

If active players were management, it would be a really, really shitty league.

i have no problem parting ways with smith if it is best for the team and the Cap.

my problem is the way DG handled it. I get he's new, but SS is a Panther legend. You don't go public and say that. You give some typical media generic response, bring Smitty in the building and try and work it out. If it can't be worked out, and you think cutting him would help bring in talent, then fine. That would suck but i could live with it.

It was completely disrespectful and something i won't forget happened.

I agree and I don't like Gettleman anyway. I think the guy is a prick. He thinks his poo don't stink.

Yes it's a business but it's not all in the numbers. The genius needs to be careful with the chemistry and leadership with Gross out of the picture. Yeah maybe SS contract needs to be reworked but don't air it out in the media. Have some class. This ain't New York.

This is all an elaborate smokescreen.  But in all seriousness, since the media took Gettlemens remarks etc out of context theres no reason for him to clarify them to Smith.  Smith of all people should know not to listen to what the media says, if there was an issue with Smith coming back, that discussion would have taken place months ago.  If Smith chose to listen to the media then its his own fault.

I like the way you take this thing out 3 years. This next season is the only one to be concerned with. Smiths performance this season was not down enough to say he is not worth it. He is worth it to keep for at least one more season. One year does not a trend make. So arghuing the next 3 years is really not realistic and not the point at all.I see 2 more good years with Smith. This next season will determine what he gets from ther on out. Mark my words Steve Smith will not be cut by the Panthers, not now, not 3 years from now!

Good years?

His performance last year was NOT worth the avg 7m that he will receive. It is that simple.

And, I will gladly take that bet. How much money are you willing to wager?

Considering it has been asked over and again and even Rom changed his language......it is what it is.

They are going to force 89 to do a Gross type deal......and they should

Someone brought up Smith's leadership earlier in the thread as a reason he should stay, maybe think of it differently and say maybe that's a reason he goes. This is Cam and Luke's team now, maybe the Panther front office wants them to be the leaders in the locker room now. Hard to accomplish that goal when you have vets that have been here for as long as Smith and Gross have.

I can't believe how big this has gotten. It's so frustrating that we're having a semi-rebuilding off season even though we're basically a young team trending up. Thanks Hurney.

That ain't Hurney that's Gettleman. Actually the team and the results achieved last year were more Hurney than Gettleman.

    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
