Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

The statement alone isn't the problem. Both RR and DG wont give a firm answer on his status. I see it as a statement to the rest of the team. But the longer it goes on unanswered the bigger the issue it becomes. They should atleast talk to Smitty and let him know what they are thinking.

Yep. You nailed it.

You mean his status as currently being under contract to the Carolina Panthers for millions of dollars?

That status?

I think this sends the wrong message to our own FA's when our FO is this noncommittal to a player currently under contract. Not to mention potential FA's we may target at a later date. Pair this with a player like Gross now retiring, this makes our organization look dysfunctional.

Was watching SVP and Russilo earlier and ESPN has now picked up this story... SMH...

Watching sportsnation right now and Marcellus and Willis Mcgahee were asked about the situation and played the hash tag game.

Marcellus used the hash tag #PourOutALilLiquor and said how Steve's career is dead to the panthers. Spoke about his own personal experience an finding out he was cut on sportscenter.

Anyway if Gettleman wants Smitty around next year, he better speak up this minute before he completely loses control of the situation. If he already hasn't.

Betraying the most loyal player of this team is unaceptable, and the Big cat must take full responabilitiy he can't hide behind his GM or coach..

I know some wanabe fans doesn't care much about a player or another only the result matter.

For me a team is much more than a group of guys wining a championship, you must win the proper way, with the proper guys.

We have shared 12 years!!! 12 years of football, 12 years of good moments.

And by the way, Smitty is still our most reliable WR, so before destroying what is left of the passing game find solutions.

Also, Ricky Proehl played up to? 38? 39?

Betrayal?

This is why most fans would make terrible GM's. You allow your fanhoid and emotions cloud what is an obvious business concern. Snitty's current performance is NOT, NOT, NOT worth $23m over the next three seasons.

Gentleman is a businessman. Mark my words....Smith either takes a paycut or he will be a cap casualty. And...in that case, cutting him woukd absolutely he the right business decision and the best thing for the long term success of the team.

I'm sure George Seifert was thinking the same thing when he cut Steve Beuerlein.

So it's not reasonable to compare George Seifert cutting the most popular player on the team for 'performance reasons' with no real backup to replace him with Dave Gettleman possibly cutting the most popular player on the team for 'performance reasons' with no real backup to replace him?

I like the way you take this thing out 3 years. This next season is the only one to be concerned with. Smiths performance this season was not down enough to say he is not worth it. He is worth it to keep for at least one more season. One year does not a trend make. So arghuing the next 3 years is really not realistic and not the point at all.I see 2 more good years with Smith. This next season will determine what he gets from ther on out. Mark my words Steve Smith will not be cut by the Panthers, not now, not 3 years from now!

    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
