Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

True. However, the Patriots have been a perennial play off team, and have won the AFC East pretty much every season since that last Super Bowl victory. When people talk about the Patriots winning, they mean they are yearly super bowl contenders and have been for a decade plus. That type of consistency is hard to create, and it is what this team desires to create (obviously with a super bowl included).

They are knocking on the door every year.

Wanna know the biggest reason they are always in the playoffs?

vs Buffalo

at Buffalo

vs NY Jets

vs Miami

at Miami

Every single season.

I suppose tiger7_88, and pantherclaw have never felt even the tiniest bit slighted at any point in their lives. Keyboard warriors.

I worked for 7 years in an area where egos were valued, divas were ostracized, and teamwork was placed above all.

But, you know, in the military we didn't get paid millions of dollars a year or have the ability to pout to friends in the national media because your tender feelings were bruised.

In the military, getting-the-fug-over-it and sucking-it-up-nancy-boy were our only options.

Either that or a general or other-than-honorable discharge.

" we know what we want to do." = we want Steve Smith to play for the Panthers. no other way to read what he said except he is in our plans to play for the Panthers.

Yeah, that is what I thought too, but he seems to be suggesting that the decision is not really in his hands, as if Smitty will have to agree on a new contract.   Maybe just overspeculation, but I think that is going to have to happen and I have read nothing that suggests otherwise.

Of course, Rivera was the speaker here, not Gettlemen.  I think Smitty took offense to Gettlemen's comments, and I am pretty sure Rivera is hoping to keep Smitty.  Soap Opera stuff.

i have no problem parting ways with smith if it is best for the team and the Cap.

my problem is the way DG handled it. I get he's new, but SS is a Panther legend. You don't go public and say that. You give some typical media generic response, bring Smitty in the building and try and work it out. If it can't be worked out, and you think cutting him would help bring in talent, then fine. That would suck but i could live with it.

It was completely disrespectful and something i won't forget happened.

He is a straight shooter, but I agree.  You could argue that Gettlemen's point was, "Nobody is above the evaluation process, even Smitty" but he has to be smart enough to know that comments he makes are going to be scrutinized.  When I read it, even before I heard one opinion about it, I thought, "Dang, he is talking as if Smitty's career is over."

Just before free agency, you have to be careful how you are portrayed in the press. "Dang, if the GM is going to throw Smitty under the bus, what would he do to a backup LB?"

To this day I think Richardson's "pie chart" presser just before underclassmen declared for the draft cost us Andrew Luck.

Yeah that's a little bit different from the NFL. I could see your argument if Steve Smith wasn't known as one of the most fiercest competitors in the league. I don't think that expecting a simple dialogue between two adults, and not through the media, is particularly asking too much.

    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
