Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

I like Gettleman, he seems like a good man, and a smart football mind, and he's done good things so far. But our local media sucks serious ass for the most part, and he's going to have to get used to the fact that most of the time they are only going to be searching for a "gotcha" quote to create anything to write about.

As for Steve, if we are wanting him to rework his deal, which I do believe he would be willing to do, we should approach him, and talk to him about it. I don't see the difficulty in this basic concept, these are men here. Create a dialogue.

^^^Agreed.

Watching JR speak at Gross's retirement today just reinforced what a bad public speaker he is(may have a lot to do with his health and age).

In any event, it is critically important these days not to shoot yourself in the foot with ill prepared public statements.

The organization's executives would benefit greatly from some lessons in public speaking.

I hope Gettleman doesn't allow this to keep getting bigger, and bigger like he did the Cam pregnant pause thing last year.

If it stems from your own comments, make a statement, and correct it.

I think that if it wasn't a legit thought the team would have responded to Smith's agent calling. However according to Smith they wouldn't talk to them.

That's going off his interview.

Honestly I could care less, everyplayer should be evaluated every year, those that have been around long enough to remember the complacentcy of Fox and Hurney knows what I'm talking about, this is a high risk high reward buisness if you dont feel like your Job is on the line every time you step out on the field then someones not doing their Job, I like the fact that DG can come in and clear house without the emotional attachment I hope he always has this approach with personel moves.

this I am not saying that I want to see smith gone, I'm just saying that no one should be exempt from evaluations.

DG is like Harvey Keitel in Pulp Fiction.  The Cleaner.

I get the feeling the players are not real fond of David Gettlemen. They loved Marty Hurney. I think that there needs to be distance in order to make tough decisions.

Steve Smith should probably understand that the quote was taken out of context and not responded when provoked by a member of the media. Maybe he senses that he will be contacted about a pay cut--or maybe he already has been.

He should be the grim reaper to the players. Nobody should feel entitled. It works for New England.

Yes.  I read another post in this thread that was critical of anyone who thinks Smitty could be cut.  He said he could not believe how stupid they are, saying the "goal is to surround Cam with weapons..."

So a weapon is a 5'9" 35-year old WR who was the #1 WR last year and caught 64 passes for 745 yards. Smitty was paid about $10,000 per yard gained.  Wise cap spending? Still, That is pretty good for a 34-year old WR. Do people expect even more from him at 35? What about 36?  37?   This person thinks the WR at 35 will be worth a contract that, over the next three seasons, pays him $23 million dollars.  That is how that person chooses to "surround Cam with weapons".  That person thinks the solution is to keep Smitty out wide which prevents more dynamic, productive players from playing,

Unfortunately, that is not how time, the cap, or common sense work.  If Smitty wants a reduced contract to go with his reduced role, then he can stay. I love Smitty---at $2 million and in the slot.

So, if the goal is "to surround Cam with weapons," then lets give him a #1 WR with some speed, range, and playmaking ability.   Smitty had those traits at 32 and even 33 years of age, but he started slowing down last year.  Cutting Smith may be the only way to "surround Cam with weapons" even though it seems we are losing a legend.  Addition by subtraction.
