Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

Go look at the dead cap money we eat if we get rid of Williams or CJ this year and get back with me. With over 17 million in dead cap space already we don't want to add Williams 9.6 or CJ's 16 million. That is why Gettleman is pushing for restructures. Players like CJ who don't restructure this year will more likely be gone next year than this unless we are willing to eat all 16 million.

Not doubting what you say about Dwill! I think because CJ has such a high base salary...he doesn't hit that hard. I'm not sure! Last year, initial report was Gross restructured and I'm almost certain he had three years left on his deal. About two weeks after the restructure, it was reported that a void clause essentially rendered it a one year deal! I'm very interested in seeing if more comes out about JStew restructure! Could be wrong, but I see Gman really shaking things up. He seems like a guy that will eat Spam for a few years if it means getting Steak sooner! He already taught us that C and D grade players on a one year deal are a lot more dangerous the overpaid B grade players!

Gettleman is still practicing triage at this point, trying to stabilize the patient. Next offseason he will be able to start using his surgical skills on the team.

If i have to choose between Smitty and Gettleman, Gettleman is out.

Lol seriously? Smitty has a lost a step and is just getting older. I love Smitty as much as the next guy but there is no doubt he has taken a step back. Gettleman has been more beneficial to this team than Smitty last year. If we didnt have Gettleman last season we are lucky to get 6 wins.

What you are saying is exactly why I think that guys who restructure will be here and those who don't will be gone.  CJ could be here if he is willing to rework his contract.  Otherwise if he refuses we will be forced to keep him this year because it will cost too much to dump him.  16 million.  If we dump him next year his cap hit would have been over 17 million but the dead cap hit will be 6 million meaning we save over 11 million.  Unless he restructures he is good as gone after this year.

Wiliams on the other hand restructured his deal which reduced his salary for 2013 through 2015 taking big salary cuts.  That is why he may be here through 2015.

He still has options for release or restructure like Godfrey for example.

I have been impressed with what DG has been able to accomplish so far.

Especially considering how he has been constrained by onerous contracts not of his own making.

I'm really looking forward to the next several off seasons as he'll have greater leeway to reshape the team's roster.

Worst part with Smitty, he is at an age where the decline starts picking up rapid pace! Most of the CB's he will face had an 8pm bedtime when Smitty played in the Super Bowl. Couldn't be late for Jr. High.

Fact-Smitty will be even less dynamic if he plays this coming season! Why play another season and risk major broken parts within game one. Go out whole! Say what you will, a few of those missed catches across the middle seemed to be caused by fear. Give him an awesome coaching job/motivation expert position and convince him to retire with Jordan. Nice statue, Bojangles bonus, and have JR buyout the remainder of his contract by purchasing the family grill!

As a fan, wanting him to go out in an even less flattering role than last year was or worse yet, a broken leg in game 3 is very selfish considering what he gave us on Sundays

Dwill's deal was never through the base salary if I recall..............it was ALLLLL signing bonus. Signing bonus is guaranteed and spread over the life of the deal. Signing bonus is what becomes dead money. Base salary is either paid or not based on if player is on the team. His salary cut was close to 400k if I remember correctly. Only way one can lessen the hit of a signing bonus is to extend the player

Gettleman should really be a little more mindful of the things he says to the media. First it was the comment about Cam last year that got blown out of proportion, and now this with Steve. If I'm being honest, I'm disappointed in Dave about this, it reflects poorly on our organization. He's got to remember he isn't a scout anymore. You've got to talk to people, and the media love to spin anything you say to fit whatever narrative they are trying to push. Future free agents look at things like this. It's not a stretch for someone we are targeting who has options besides us to ask themselves, if we treat a guy like Steve Smith like that, who's been here all these years, and done so much for this franchise, how would we treat them? I'm a little embarrassed for us right now. Just a bad look.

I don't think you can blame Smith's decline in production entirely on his age/declining skill set, you also have to look at how the offense as a whole was run last year. Not denying that hes slowed down some, but he possibly could have been a 1000+ yard guy again in a Chud offense and with no injuries. Either way, I don't think he's worth $7M, but doesn't seem like this situation was handled well.

Did anyone else notice Gross mentioning he hated Gman last off season in his retirement speech? Obviously he was joking but jokes have some basis in reality, and I wonder if this is kind of an unspoken sentiment a lot of guys have.

Of course I can see why people might resent anyone who tries to actually play hardball and get a good price for a guy after having Marty "market value"** Hurney as your last GM.

**note: sarcasm

Marty limpdick Hurney cut Muhsin Muhammad coming off of the best year he's ever had when he was 31.

If you don't think Gettleman would cut Smitty in a hurry if he doesn't play ball (IE take a paycut more in line with his production) at the age of  34 a year after having arguably his worst season, you're fuging delusional.

May be wrong since it was a decade ago but I don't think Moose was cut. I think we just didn't go all in for him in FA and the Bears offered more.

I keep seeing people talk about how easy it apparently is to cut Steve Smith, but I don't see many suggestions on who we would replace him with. Unless you are thrilled about the idea of Olsen being our quarterbacks only legitimate target in an offense that was already in the bottom half of the league last year. Maybe we should just cut Olsen too since he's making too much money. Cam doesn't need weapons.
