Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

Johnny Rockets

Pretty clear that DG evaluates everyone evenly. Considering one of the first things he said about Cam was that he better produce wins....

Marty Hurney is no longer here. Steve will be a Panther bc he's a good player not because he's a team legend. He needs to realize that.

That comment was taken out of context just like this one was I'm sure. Generic, we will evaluate blah blah going forward.

Yeah, but like I said, Smitty has already been in a diminished role, so no need to come out and allude to that in public.  G-man should have given the standard "Steve has been a vital part of the organization, and he is a part of the puzzle going forward."  That's all either G-man or Rivera had to say.

I don't blame Smitty for responding in public. He just returned the "favor" is all.  I doubt any graves are dug, and the only thing that he may be "forced" to do is to take a pay cut of some sort.  He also has the option of moving on.

The Big Cat sees all, so if anyone digs any graves, it will be him.

The debate isn't whether or not we need Steve Smith.

The debate is about whether Jerry Richardson would fire David Gettleman for hypothetically releasing an aging receiver who's production is on the decline but his paycheck is the same.

Big Cat is not firing DG even if he does release Steve Smith.  It was DG's signings that got us to 12-4.  That's worth more then Smith's delicate sensibilities.....and they are delicate ( I know first hand).

I agree it would be nice to have Smith....a great Panther finish his great career with decent production as a Panther.   I also thought that with Kasay, Kris Jenkins, and Pep.  Things change.

Let me ask you this hypothetical.

If cutting Smith this year was the difference in resigning Cam next year what would you do?

Besides DG didn't even put us in this position.  It was hurney.  Why is this even a conversation?  Over payed running backs.  Why is it scary that we might lose the Kracken?  Over payed running backs.

You're mad at the wrong dude.

It's funny a lot of posters are willing to sacrifice team success in order to keep a guy they like. Very Hurney like.

agreed, but to be fair i think a lot of it is based in a belief that we can't be good without him, which just isn't the case. he can and will be replaced when it's time. it won't be smitty v.2, but it will be someone who can produce big time for us. the crazy thing about how much he's getting paid, we can get 2-3 players who can each put up as much yardage and TDs as he did last year.

I am not here to say what approach is right or which one is wrong, but I just wanted to say, that those claiming that it is a business and Smith needs to understand this...

I bet not catch one of you criticizing players for taking as much money as possible or as many years as possible or for not providing "discounts" to any organization.

Not saying cutting Smith is right or wrong, just pointing out the hypocrisy that exists.

I think players should ask for as much guaranteed money as possible. It's why I'm not mad at Stewart or Williams, they did what was best for them and that was getting paid.

Yeah because the Panthers have screwed Steve Smith.  Which is why he's been with us for 11 seasons and very handsomely rewarded for it.

would he, though?

Aging receivers have a tendency to be left out in the cold, even if they still have the ability to contribute.  Teams don't want to lose the roster spot that would otherwise be occupied by a younger, developing receiver.

Yes he would. Steves intensity and passion is enough to land him on a team, plus its not like he's some slouch, he can still play and contribute.
