Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

Johnny Rockets

He was asked about Smith again during Gross' press conference and said the following about it.

so he didn't say what you said."what his role will be" means he has a role and it is yet to be determined. That is light years away from "may not be on ther team." your statement was totally bogus. He is in the teams plans.

i hate to say this. But I'm hoping Smith chooses to retire. $12 mil is a TON of money and to be quite blunt we got similar production last year out of Ted Ginn (who cost us less than a mil) with Smithy's $12mil we could resign Hardy AND Ted Ginn and still have enough Cap wiggle room to replace Gross. It would be the best way to improve our offense.

I love Smithy, but he just isn't worth his contract anymore.

Bad case of selective reading here. Not having a role is still an option and you can tell that by the rest of what Rivera says when asked about it.  There's plenty of key wording in his statement that tell you a lot about the situation the team is in with Smith.

I'm not saying he won't be back, I'm saying it's highly unlikely that Smith will be back under his current contract.

I selected the whole comment you made something up out of what was not said. Steve Smith is in the teams plans. That does not mean he may not be here. that means we plan to have him here.when Rivera says he has a role then the rest is in that context it doesn't change. it is out right false to say that Rivera said he may not be on the team. Not selective reading but fact.

Back to my original comment, Steve Smith is making this call.

I am all for what is best for the team.

Smitty has started to decline over the last few years but is still a leader on and off the field. He is loved by the fans and all his teammates. His contract no longer reflects his worth and I wish he would consider a pay cut. With that said I understand when players don't because how many of us actually would at work?

If cutting him is best for the team then I am fine with it. His talent can be replaced so if we cut him we save 6 mill at least correct? So the question you have to ask yourself is can we get a replacement or a better player at 6 million?

Once again having him in a role that doesn't involve him catching footballs (saying somewhere else in the organization that runs the Panther's) Is still a role. Saying Smith's future is tied up to what the team does in free agency and what the situation and circumstances with the team is not saying he's going to playing here no matter what.

ok somehow i think G-man will decide he is worth it to the team. OK is that better for you. Bottom line Smith stays no matter how you want to slice it.

Maybe.

I still believe he'll be back, but I also acknowledge his not being here is a very real possibility.

this.

if the team stance is to keep smith no matter the cost to the team until he says he's done, then the team loses out.

smith has been the franchise for years, but we have to decide whether we want to move the team forward or live inthe past. the time iscoming, and  may have come, that the co$t of keeping smith may be too much to warrant the emotional benefits of keeping him. his production can be replaced. someone will rise up as a leader. we have to be ready and willing to move on.

i know this will be tough for some of our younger fans because smith has been such a huge part of what the panthers are for mkst of their lives, but the team was here long before he was and will be here long after. it's going to happen sooner or later and as much of a fan of his as I've been since he's been here, i don't want him here if his performance and production can be replaced with a much cheaper option. we can't afford to pay a guy that much and have him be that significant a part of the cap just because he's the "heart" of the team.

there are other players who carry big cap hits who i would much rather see us move on from, but unfortunately releasing them wwould be far too expensive. Smith's contract and the way it is structured combined with his level of production unfortunately makes him one of the few expendable players on the roster.

all that said, i don't want us to move on from him until we have a solid plan in place for this WR corps to be rebuilt without him...but then because of that contract we might not have that luxury.

The Problem with cutting Smith is he is STILL our best WR and we have not found a replacement. Quite frankly Im not even sure they can replace him this year and still keep Cam Standing up right. Gross retiring and Smith on the bubble is just cold hard reality that we are not even close to a SB team. Not even in the area code.
