Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

Johnny Rockets

I have had the opportunity to talk extensively to several former players in the NFL, one in fact is a partner in a business venture we hold together. As they have described it the private sector for those who are employed is much more congenial than the NFL once they have "used you up". It is business, but Smith, despite the love the community has for him as player, he is an old guy in the NFL and it's coming time to move him out, and anyone once they break into their early 30's the fat lady is warming up for her song cause their days are numbered. The clubs tell the players all the right things while they are useful but when the time is up, there is no service pin, cake, watch and loving going on when they send the signal it is time to go. Yes, they have been paid extremely well, but the attitude of the league is once they are gone, go hang with the NFL Alumni Club if you want to be around the league. It is a brutal body shop business, Manpower with pads.

Serious question for you guys, just to see where the thinking is at. Do you think SS production has diminished because he's losing his skills or because the O is lacking the tools to take the main focus off him? With Dwill underachieving, JStew always hurt, no serious receiving threat opposite him, and a QB that has had to pick up the NFL game and spend a lot of time running for his life, is this really all SS's fault? I tend to think it's a little of both and that's where the evaluation for DG, RR and the FO is really focused.

some skills have clearly diminished......speed, burst, etc.

some of his skills are better.....he is probably a better route runner, better with contact etc.  The skills you enchance with age and experience.

Williams isnt' underachieving....he is a 30 year old RB

I think Steve honestly still had the talent to be a 1,000 yd WR this past year. He missed two games and had a case of the dropsies for a while that set him back. But obviously he is not the dominant player he was. But he's damn impressive for his age. He's overachieving for himself in a position he should not be in right now.

He could probably still have a big year in a offense with Brady or Manning but really we just need to get some WR's that can take double teams and really help him out for once.

It would cost us two extra million to cut him this season, unless of course its a June 1 cut, which would only be an option if we get new players.

With the way his contract is set up if he's cut, it saves the team 2 million and the team would owe 5 million to him. If he's cut before July 1st the 3 million option/non-exercise fee wouldn't count only his signing bonus and 3 million in guaranteed salary.

If he's a June 1st cut, the team saves 4 million this season and 4 million next season.

well we wont know his future until june 1 or july whichever it is.  but his reaction to a generic comment that DG gives for pretty much everyone and i dont have a problem with, probably throws any renegotiations out the door.

Pretty much, unless Gettleman and Rivera do a good job at smoothing it over. Which is why I think he's done and will retire in the next couple weeks. It'll look forced because of what Gettleman said and that's unfortunate but it's likely to happen now.

Smitty IS this fuging team. The ONLY way at this point you let him go is if it's his decision to retire. fug everything about this situation, penny pinching fine young malery if you ask me.

I will lose my collective poo (already started if you can't tell) if they in fact don't keep him till HE decides he is done. I may have a lot of free time this coming fall as my Sundays may be fuging cleared up.  Yeah, I said it. I have no interest in seeing him finish his career on another team, or have any interest in supporting this team anytime soon if this is the new fuging mentality.

aren't you the one who said Gross will sign for 2 more years? Doesn't matter. don't see any previous indicator that Smith contemplating retiring.

that's funny. there is no chance he is not here.next season, NONE!

well, that is just a false statement.

Gettlemen may want to do a Gross type deal with 89 or who knows.   89 is now a lone wolf in many aspects....Jake, Kasay, Gross, all his boys are gone.  He probably isn't as invested as we think at this stage.  He may take the pay and a shot at better stats elsewhere (all he is doing now is chasing stats really and hoping he stumbles into a ring)
