Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

You are living in a dream world.  The inmates do not run the prison.

I would post an organization chart and try to explain how hierarchy in a business works but I don't think it would change anything.

No it wouldn't make a change anything. Steve Smith writes his own ticket. This little dance is for the public. Watch what they do not what they say. When it is all over I will gladly listen to your views on the real world and hierarchy in a business.Organization Chart ? really?

Maybe back when Marty Hurney was in charge (but look where that got us).  Those days are over.

If Gettleman believes releasing Smith is the best thing for the team, then that's what will happen.

yeash, ok let's see how we feel about that next season when we overpay someone else. On the record "we discourage the practice." spare me the company line  the loss of Steve Smith at this point would cost more than the cap money we save.

contrary to what some believe Steve Smith is not only the best receiver we have and that we have ever had but he is the heart and soul of this team. So I don't believ you cut out and sell your soul for a few dollars of cap space.

I think you think long and hard about cutting Smith because of his contract. His option bonus/ non-exercise fee isn't going to get paid.

I hate being late to the party. Mostly because the beer is usually gone, as are all the decent chicks. But...

Wow. Has this thing taken flight? Sure Steve is due more money than he is basically worth. And we need to figure out a way to diminish his cap hit. But it sounds like the powers that be have done a really bad job of going about this. Whether it is from answering questions before you know what the answer is, or just wanting to give an answer so you can move on. Either way. Gman and Ron have stepped on a rattler.

Smitty has earned the right to be consulted. He has earned the right to have a face to face. Lay out the plan, and let him decide what he wants to do. Playing it out this way has caused a mess. Whether intentional or not.

Gman has done a marvelous job...until this. Let's see how he handle his first public relations nightmare. If we come out of this smelling good, yeah. If we come out of this smelling like cow dung...oops.

I want Smitty back. At a reasonable price. Which I am pretty sure is what Smitty would do. Now...I ain't so sure. This is going to be fun.

I think Gettleman's oddly worded press conference was done on purpose, to make sure that Smith wouldn't want to come back and he would think about retiring before being cut. I'm not sure, but it might save the team more money if he retires.

I think it was all done on purpose, was it done badly......of course it was. They should of asked smith to retire in private, not do it in a public setting.

I think that's what it comes down to though, the team wants him to retire so they don't have to cut him.

Really? And if Gettleman decided to cut SS?

I don't think that Gettleman wants to cut Steve so much as he wants to renegotiate his contract and reduce money going forward and not trigger a salary for 2016 which is what triggering the option will do.  So if Smitty is wiling to do that I suspect they will try to work things out.  If he refuses then he will either be cut this year or surely next barring a pro-bowl year and another 1200 yards.

So I do think that Smith will largely determine how this plays out based on what he is willing to do or not accept.

Just my opinion from what I gleaned here and elsewhere.

Somehow I get the feeling G-man will decide Smith is still good for this team.

Yeah, I don't think he will be cut either, but if he were to cut Smitty, he would have no say it the matter.

Let me say I like what Gettleman is doing it sends a message and keeping players that make more than they produce wont happen here.   This the way you run a NFL team and get the most out of people.  Now Smitty never needed motivation he is at the end of his career and what he is making compared to production is huge.  I thank him for the years he has been here but at one point or another everyone has to leave the team.

An outright cut is simply that but it doesn't sound like is what they want to do.  It would be bad for the team not to at least try to work things out. Plus we really don't want one of our division rivals to pick him up this year.

that is just dumb. if G-man did it on purpose he is an idiot. That is why I don't think it was on puropose. If the classy thing to do is ask him to retire in public then I see no reason so far to believe G-man would not be classy about this situation.Nothing in his actions so far suggest he would try to do a stupid thing like this.

I wouldn't call this a public relations nightmare....I mean just last offseason Gettlemen threw Cam under the bus a litte and acted like he didn't know if the future was the future.  DON"T FORGET....Gettlemen is a damn yankee.  His style is simply different.  He may not mean anything by what he says he just may speak in certain terms that aren't as pretty as say other GMs would.

Our franchise, by NFL standards, has always been overly loyal....to a fault.  Maybe we are shifting back toward more of the norm of NFL standards.

If Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, etc can play in different uniforms......so can  guys like 89.

Serious question for you guys, just to see where the thinking is at. Do you think SS production has diminished because he's losing his skills or because the O is lacking the tools to take the main focus off him? With Dwill underachieving, JStew always hurt, no serious receiving threat opposite him, and a QB that has had to pick up the NFL game and spend a lot of time running for his life, is this really all SS's fault? I tend to think it's a little of both and that's where the evaluation for DG, RR and the FO is really focused.

When Rivera was asked Wednesday at a press conference announcing Jordan Gross' retirement if he thinks Smith will be back next season, the coach said, "A lot of it will have to do with what our situation and circumstances are going to be. I think as we go forward, just what the role is going to be we'll see."     Rivera says the Panthers need to clear cap room and says free agency may determine what happens with the 34-year-old Smith.

    • As I said less than 10 minutes into the game, Boston looks nothing like we're used to seeing. Regardless, any curb-stomping of the Bruins is welcome.  The scorers all got the glory tonight, but all 6 D-men had excellent games. Across the board- Gost, Orlov, Chatty, Walker and, of course, Slavin & Burns.
    • I just tried a few mock draft simulators and this is the only way lol. Nothing else makes sense.
    • No, biggest weakness is pass rush, but I don't think there is a blue chip can't miss DE prospect to take at #1 this year, same as with QB.  But beyond that, moving forward, yea WR is a pretty damn big weakness. We have 1 game this season over 224 yards passing and just traded away our best WR (who wasn't going to re-sign here anyways).  That WR no longer on the team was also the only player we've had this year who had over 78 yards receiving in a game.  So again, yea, WR is one of our biggest weaknesses even right now, let alone moving into the future. As I just said in my other post, I love Legette, but he's not going to be a Top 5-10 WR type of guy, Top 15-20 I can see, I think he can be a good #1 WR or an elite #2. After that, what do we have for the future?  Thielen isn't part of it, sure as hell isn't going to be Mingo, and as much as we all like Coker, in no world is Coker as our #2 to Legette as the #1 going be considered as "having weapons" at WR, even with Brooks and Sanders. But put someone like T-Mac into that group, who I genuinely think is going to be a Top 5 WR in this league for a long time, and it changes things.  A Top 5 WR with Legette/Coker as the 2/3, along with Brooks and Sanders, has the potential to be one of the best set of offensive weapons in the league if they reach their potential.
