Panthers approx $29 mil under projected $132 mil cap per Joe Person

If he could get us a franchise LT and WR then the foundation of this team would be set. Once we have the QB, LT, WR, and DL intact, the rest are plug in guys. We won't have to worry too much about money the next 2-3 years. By then a few big contracts will be expired.

You always have to worry about money. Cam, Luke, and Star are all going to kill the bank. It would probably take 4 or 5 seasons before we can get truly healthy in the salary cap. It will all depend on the contracts DG gives out and how well the players perform.

Keep in mind we are pushing problems in the future to fix the mess we are currently in. You will see those money problems down the road.

Josh Thomas, Josh Norman, and Pilares will probably all be cut. Along with the possibilities of DeAngelo, Godfrey, Dwan Edwards, and Blacknurn there will be more room coming.

I forgot Pilares was even on the roster lol and the only production we got out of him was that kickoff return TD against the Lions in 2011

This is the only way teams can keep their stars and remain competitive. It's through constant restructuring. The most important thing is whether we make good of that money by adding talents.

Can anyone tell me how much cap space we had last year before we started signing the one year desk free agents?

Trying to figure out how much we really need after we tag hardy?

I'm too lazy to do the math, but here is a link by Knox Bardeen, our BR NFC lead writer, that should be a good starting point. All you have to do is add the guys salaries to that figure.  Here is one with last year's figure after Jun 1, and here is one near the beginning of preseason by Yasinskas.

You have to keep in mind though that guys who sacrificed and took modest one-year deals last year may not want to hear all that this year (especially Cap).

Gross contemplating retirement might be beneficial -- one less expensive FA to worry about.

I say extend Gano, Mitchell, Ginn, Munnerlyn and Hardy, cut Godfrey, Norman and D. Edwards, and let Florence, LaFell, Wharton, Mikell, Blackburn and Cole walk.

Edwards is relatively cheep imo, relative to the solid push that he provides up the middle, and really was an integral part of the rotation as we began to solidify our dominance last season.  Moreover, Mikell would be nice to re-sign to keep the safety position from becoming a suspect position in 2014. Mikell's veteran presence, experience and leadership is difficult to replace.  Wharton should also be a cheap enough Band-Aid and provides a veeran presence.

I know what you're saying, but I don't believe that the security of relatively cheap vets should be cut in favor of young question marks who didn't really show that they were ready to make the transition to starter status. Another year would probably do wonders.

Agreed. So far he's making the same moves Hurney had to do yearly to be under the cap limit... and got praised for it (yay Hurneymagic!) until poeple realized what those moves really meant.

Panthers have already committed 100M for the 2015 season on only 29 players and Cam isn't one of them.

Now i'm not saying Gettleman is bad, far from it. He bought us an entire secondary (including the nickel) for less than 4M, the guy can scout but let's not crown him yet, he's not doing magic with the cap.

you must have forgotten what the cap was like last year when he got here.

hurney would have pushed a whole lot more money back than gettleman has and he played hardball with players in a way that hurney wouldn't have.

what he did with the cap last year was amazing. hurney would have been lucky to just get us under and it would have predominantly been by restructuring and moving money backwards. with gettleman that was only a small part and he was able to get us about $16mil in space and do enough for us to roll a few million over this year.

he's as much as a magic man with that cap as anyone could be.

Don't think Godfrey is being cut.

He would've been one of the first to restructure if he was going to be retained because Godfrey lacks leverage... With multiple players having restructured, without a word of Godfrey currently restructuring only leads to him being cut on June 1st.

Gettleman isn't going to let Godfrey touch that 7 million he's due.
