Tweak or Overhaul?

It was in Josh Norris' most recent talk on the Mac Attack

Josh didn't mention anything about Kug being overweight. He just doesn't think he'll ever start for us (or that he'll just flame out). Kug did come in out of shape for OTAs and ended up having knee surgery.

Given that Keenan Allen was taken in the third round and Kugbila was taken in the fourth round (we did not have a third round pick).....your list is a complete fail.

that's a complete lie. We could've easily used that pick to trade up lol. But hey no WRS and ohhh CAM IS A TERRIBLE QB GAME MANGER!!!!!!! smh.

By the way, I seriously doubt that Jordan retiring means that we're guaranteed to draft an OT early. That's just not Gettleman's philosophy. What it does mean however, is that we'll be a bit more active with OT's in FA. If only we weren't so cap struck... Fug you Hurney.

I think so too, I remember (vaguely) an article last year that mentioned that Gettleman didn't believe in taking a OL in the 1st.  But I could be wrong ( I smoke too much weed to remember), it could have been a post I read on here for all I know.  But I looked up the Giants draft and the never took a OL in the 1st two rounds (not 2013 Gman was already here) since they drafted Rivers, the pick up a Guard in the 2nd.  Last year they picked Pugh….

Oh, I was referring more to Gettleman's BPA philosophy. The only 1st round OT prospect I see being available is Moses -- and I just don't think he'll be a major upgrade to Bell. I'm not sure he can play LT in the pros, either.

To be honest I really don't like the idea of starting a bunch of rookies on the line so I don't think an overhaul is the way to go right now.  What we need to start doing throughout the roster is start building quality depth that can step up when these expensive and aging players walk away.  We've done that in a few areas like DL and Linebacker but not much else.

That's where scouting departments, coaching, and managing our roster has to be better otherwise this will always be an issue.  I think this is basically Gettlemen's plan but it will take time to come together.  And Hurney's awful drafting in the late rounds has left us with few guys who are ready to step up and play.

As far as the offensive line goes we need to get some serviceable starters and then draft some decent players in the later rounds.  I think this is what gettlemen will do throughout the roster until we constantly have guys ready to come in and play.  That is the best way to avoid having to pay out huge contracts while staying competitive year in and year out.

so what specific moves differentiate a tweak or overhaul in your scenario? Re-signing Byron Bell and Wharton or not?

Obviously we're not going to re-sign Bell, he's horrible. Wharton played pretty well, we'll most likely try to re-sign on another 1 year deal. If we don't though it's not really a big deal, there's always several aging vet OGs each offseason you can sign as a one year band-aid. If we sign Wharton or a different vet OG, probably won't make much of a difference.

I have a hard time seeing a future where Bell isn't resigned. He may suck but the coaches seem to really like him and he should be dirt cheap.
