If we replace Gross it'll be in the draft or in FA with a mid-level guy like Anthony Collins of the Bengals until we can address LT long-term in the draft.

8-9 mil per year is substantially lower than 12 mil per year. Veldheer ain't getting Hardy money. That would be insane on its own merit, not to mention that a few other LTs will be on the market also.

The franchise tag for a left tackle this year is 11.25m. He's not going to go for anything less than that. Much like how everyone said in the other thread that Cam would no way take less than the franchise number for a QB.

If no one is willing to pay 11.25 mil per year to Veldheer, which is highly likely, then he ain't getting 11.25 mil per year.  The market will determine what he is worth.  You're assuming that he is a top 5 LT in the league, and you're not taking into account his perceived injury history.

 

Like the writer said in his analysis, smart teams will only tag a player if they are actually top 5 at their position. We aren't in a position to throw top 5 money at players who aren't top 5, and the writer suggests that the Raiders GM will not sacrifice the long term for short term gain either, notwithstanding that they have plenty of cap space because it's not good business.

He's out of the Panthers price range. They'll have about 4-5 million they would be able to spend on a LT.

iirc, the contracts signed for the top LTs in FA last year were around $8mil/year. i don't see this crop getting much more than that. the franchise tag isn't a good gauge on what LTs will be signing for.

Hes a very good LT, his contract will be interesting seeing as he missed most of the season with a tricep tear.  But the Raiders have plenty of money to spend and its hard imagining him getting out of Oakland.

Perceived injury history? He had never missed a game before last season when he tore his triceps. That's false information. Here's a blurb on him from Evan silva:
