Guess who got 16 reps on the bench press today

top dawg

He'll be gone before we pick with his draft stock rising.

doubt that.

We need a tall guy who can go up, and get the ball. Stop looking for the next Steve Smith. Too many Marty Hurney's here.

Cause you cant possibly draft another taller WR later. -__-

This x a zillion. We've tried that with robinson, edwards, pilares, and most recently joe adams.

lol @ comparing a 1st round talent like Cooks with any of those guys.

My dream scenario would be to draft Brandin Cooks in the 1st and Brandon Coleman in the 3rd; to appease those wanting a big target, don't forget the Panthers already have Marvin McNutt. We just need someone that can get open on a consistent basis.

Martavis Bryant, though not "big" in the purest sense of the word, as he is only around 200 lbs, is very intriguing also. he has had a fairly nice Combine also.  The kid looks good.

Edit: I stand corrected. Bryant is apparently 217

It was somewhat amazing that this little guy got so many reps.  If you look at him, you'd probably say "naaaahhh!"  I was expecting big Benjamin to get more than he got (which I believe was 12).  Brandon Coleman got 21, as did Jordan Matthews. Cody Latimer was the top at 23. Jeff Janis and Mike Campanro got 20, and Martavis Bryant and Sammy Watkins tied with Cooks.

Smaller armed guys are the ones who can bench press the most. It's the long armed guys who have trouble putting up a lot of reps.

I understand that Cam tends to sail balls and so we "need" a bigger receiver, but we shouldn't skip over a complete prospect like Cooks just because he's short. Cam has thrived with Steve Smith ever since game 1 of his rookie year. And don't give me that "Steve Smith has an insane vertical and fights for the ball" cause how many times has Cam thrown up a jump-ball to Smith? That one TD against the Saints in year 1? For the most part, he puts his passes on the money...it's more about chemistry. You'll see the high passes mostly when the pocket collapses and he's under heavy pressure. If we fix the o-line and get a receiver who can consistently get open, I have no doubt Cam can excel with a short receiving corps. Obviously we SHOULD draft a bigger receiver as well, mostly for the red zone...but if Cooks is there in Round 1, I'm all for taking him and then getting a Coleman or Bryant in the later rounds.

Nothing is absolute. There are several long-armed guys in the list of top performers at WR.

I agree. I'm just saying that, in general, it's easier for guys with shorter arms to bench press more. It's actually a known thing in the world of weight lifting. Same as, shorter guys can squat more.

The key word is "chemistry".  Thanks for making sense.

I'm not enamored with anyone. Like I have said before, I will be good with whomever G-man picks. Furthermore, Cam needs play-makers---no matter the size. That's what Cam needs: play-makers!

Cam is still working on the overthrows, a taller receiver would do him more good.

Why not just draft a taller WR to begin with then?

I understand those of you who are enamored by Cooks. It's the same lot of you who were drooling over Tavon Austin. The problem with Cooks is, there are better, more polished WRs in this class that will be there when we pick. If you give me the choice of Cooks or Matthews/Moncrief/ASJ/etc, I'm going with the guy not named Cooks every day of the week.

There are some intriguing prospects in the later rounds who are similar to Cooks, though. Guys like Huff, who is a return man with electric ability in the slot. Then there's guys like Reese, who is fast and vertical. Someone like Janis, who is tall and almost as fast.

I agree. 39 inch vertical, ran a 4.42 at 6"4. Even though you can qualify his time by pointing out that he is 211 pounds, still impressive regardless. Very raw prospect, but good coaching can help him reach is potential.
