this is a good post.I don't agree with all of but I do agree that people who toss around the N-word (or any other racially/hatefully charged word) are uneducated, immature, and ignorant.

Affluence, education and wealth is the only cure. Can't expect individuals who were raised in adverse situation most of their lives to suddenly change everything about themselves to the point none of it is reflected. None of those labels highlighted are by choice. And, sometimes it takes a full generation to overcome those labels. Can't be done through fear and intimidation either. The only thing we can learn from this is: Don't enslave humans.

Yes more good points. I'm guilty of calling people retards (especially the dookie fans in the NCAA sub forum here) but that's a nasty word too and I'm working on improving myself by eliminating that word from my vocabulary.

solid post. Do the people defending the word actually think that when John Carlos sees Eric Holder walking down the street; John would walk up to Mr. Holder and say "what's up my ------?" lol

I would bet that if Holder, Carlos, even Obama went to some of the places that I frequent as in the Gym and court, more than a few people would say it and not think twice about what they just did, nor realize how disrespectful they were.  So many people think that it's a respectful term of endearment, and it's hard and nearly impossible to convince them otherwise.

I used to play pick up games at Park RD park (when I was 5 years younger and 20 lbs lighter lol) and heard the word every 15 seconds. It wasn't as bad as when I competed in intramurals in college (FB and BB) but I do recall it being said by african americans and nobody on the court/field really paid attention to it.

I'd also be surprised that if educated, intelligent, self respecting, successful blacks like the ones we've mentioned used that word though.

I wouldn't go that far.  I know quite a few very well educated banker/accountant/lawyers who will say some highly offensive things when no one who would be offended is around, including the word, so I don't put any type of language past anyone.

Men are men, and we talk like we're in a locker room, but usually adults know that there is a time, place, and manner for all things...the self respecting part comes in when kids, and the ignorant have continuously crossed the line and placed it into unacceptable territory, which is in the general public,  airwaves... it's everywhere.  It's fast becoming the slang/offensive word of choice.
