Gleaning Rivera's pulse on the draft.

From listening to what he has to say, it doesn't sound like we're going to necessarily be looking for "projects".  This may not bode well for those of you wanting Kelvin Benjamin (for example). Benjamin is going to have to do well enough at the Combine to show that he can be ready to contribute from the beginning to be our first round pick, but not well enough that he gets snatched up by someone else. Interesting.

All-in-all I believe that WR is a top priority, but again we're going to take the BPA. Of course our board is obviously going to be filled with WRs, O-linemen and CBs, but we're still not abandoning  the chance to nab a quality D-lineman if warranted.

Being that Rivera believes that this draft is deep at those many positions, who knows what's going to happen in the first round? For those who want play-makers at WR, remember that our coach alludes to the fact that we may be able to get one a little later than you may think.

Absolutely.  I think they are surprised that that the cap will increase by $7 million.  I think they are correct in stating that the draft is deep at our positions of need--except DE.  Then there is the fact that Gettlemen is reworking some contracts.  I think they are going to go at Hardy a bit more aggressively than originally thought.  If they can find 3-4 players in the draft who can step in immediately, rework CJ, we could have Hardy in 2015.  Gettlemen has stated many times that the #2 defense in the NFL had, at times, 6 rookies on the field.  Maybe he is preparing us for 2014, when we have a rookie FS, CB, RT, and WR in the lineup and a DT in the rotation.

We could find our DBs and OL in the draft if Gross re-signs. While I agree that we will take BPA, your point about our board is correct--it should be loaded with OTs, WRs, and DBs.

The draft is deep at DT as well.  We have Star and KK, but not much after that. Cole and Edwards are going to be about 33--Cole is a FA, as a matter of fact.  So, we are going to take a Kelsey QUarles or someone like that if he is there in the 4th.

The stars are aligned if we play our cards right.

This draft is full of wide receivers who are pieces of the pie, just different pieces. For example, Jordan Matthews is probably the most complete out of all the prospects. Hands, speed, production, route running. He is far and away the most pro ready. But, people think his ceiling isn't very high, that he may have already hit the best he's going to get.

Then there's guys like Beckham and Landry who fit into a pro style offense, but do different things.

Well, that's debatable. There are more than a few who don't believe that Benjamin is necessarily anywhere near pro ready, but of course there will be someone who doesn't care, being attracted to Benjamin's physical stature and measurables.

Do not want. He's Jarret 2.0

I think we can steal a hella LB during this draft...

People are so focused on the Offensive side.

CJ Mosley or Barr could be the next protege for Ron.. With a few years left for TD.. fuging nasty defense

meanwhile Cam runs for his life on the other side of the ball and has no one to throw to

i don't believe for a minute that Smith's role will change much.he may be a mentor somewhat but that is not a diminished role. That is an expanded role.Smith is not done yet. I think the he makes that call.

G-man, will make the personnel decision, but it will be Rivera making the call based upon Smith's play, relative to the success of other WRs' play on the field.

this is how it will go down.G-Man," So Ron , where does Smith fit in this year?"

Ron," hold on I'll get back to you."

Ron, " so Steve, how's it going?"

Smitty," I'm good."

Ron,"Dave, it all good!"
