If Smitty is "evaluated" and not on this team next yearn

WOW!!

I'd actually say it was Olsen. Ginn has the deep speed, but lacks the ball skills to make a play on the ball if covered. He's only a deep threat if theres's a blown coverage or he can beat his man early and use his speed to create separation.

Olsen is probably the best all around "reciever" on the team at this point. As far as WR goes Ginn is the only one who can really take the top off the D. And thats a shame. We need upgrades in the worst sort of way.

His contract values may change with his option bonus, no way to know how it's set up. Him being cut could save the team more then it appears, it would just depend on if there are any exit clauses due to performance in his option clause.

Lots of variables here that fans won't know about. If I remember the June 1st cut rules, his cap due for this season would hit immediately and then the rest would hit next season.  If that's the case then it saves the team 4 million this season and next.

As you say there has to be more than what is reported.  I hope Smitty plays nice and gets to stay on board. Unless he wants to go.

Little secret I have been holding tight due to how I know this, but there were two trades in place early last season before we turned things around. One to the pats and the other to the skins. Both were based on Smitty taking a pay cut. He wouldn't budge so the deals never happened.

Smith himself was actively trying to get traded, but it came down to his salary being too much.

It's hard to imagine the team without 89. He is probably everyone's favorite panther of all time, and is the best to ever put on the uniform. That being said, with all this cap hell we are in, no one is safe, and Smitty isn't a 1200 yard, 10 TD receiver anymore but gets paid VERY well.

I hope the team can resolve it with him amicably, so that he can play one more year at least before leaving on his own terms.

The Panthers without Steve Smith? Wow. Just wow. Very difficult to imagine.

Ditto.

Steve has gotten his money through the years. Hopefully...he is willing to give back. Because his cap hit is pretty hefty for what we could reasonably expect his production to be.

Not as a rookie...

Wide outs tend to struggle in their first year unless they are just incredibly NFL ready.

Normally I would agree with you that a WR in the 1st is iffy at best. The only caveat I have is that we have been on a roll as of late. Just maybe it is our time to get lucky and actually hit on a WR. Why not?

Smith can't even get 800 yards or 5 TDs as the primary WR on a 12-4 team with a Pro Bowl QB.

Did you watch our Offense last year? Plus his late year injury? He could have been close to a 1000 yards with just a little help.

He still demands attention. And that is all you can ask. His cap hit is relevant to his value. But...unless we plan on utilizing him more. That cap hit is in question.

Personally, our passing game is in need of some attention. But while Rivera and Gman are in charge. Our passing game will always play second fiddle to the running game. So what value does Steve really have? Give the Panthers a monetary break. Or chance playing elsewhere next year?

Steve and Hardy are the two that have the most say on where they play next year. Play fair with us, and we will do our best to take care of you. Or not? What do I know?
