If Smitty is "evaluated" and not on this team next yearn

WOW!!

Smitty is my favorite player but if I were the GM I'd tell him, not ask, to take a large pay cut. If he refuses I'd cut him & sign Nicks. He's not worth his cap hit. He's the greatest to ever wear the black & blue & he's one of the team leaders but he's pretty average now.

If Jerry Rice can be shown the door & replaced so can #89.

All good things come to an end.

Are you kidding me? That would be a massive spit in the face to just flat out tell him to take a pay cut. He deserves the respect to simply explain the cap situation and ask about a pay cut. If he said no, then we would still need to keep him. I don't care about his on the field production, but his off the field production means more to this team than anybody's in my opinion. Do you remember him yelling to a young special teams player (forget who...) during the Seahawks game when he committed 2 stupid penalties? Do you think Cam would've matured nearly this much without Smith?? Do you think he had absolutely nothing to do with the spark that caused our huge winning streak after starting 1-3?? Smitty is here to stay until he retires, and if not then this team will go downhill, very fast. What do you think Cam would think of us losing Smitty? He's as important to this team as Cam or Kuechly is in my opinion. When he retires that's one thing, but it's not that time yet, and even then he would likely become part of the coaching staff. Smith is the player most deserving of a Super Bowl ring in the league and to just cut him when things are looking bright would be the most ridiculous thing to ever happen to the Panthers. Worse than anything Hurney did.

Bill Voth wrote another story on it,

http://billvoth.com/steve-smith-possibility-uncomfortable-change-carolina/

While whispers about the move have been swirling around in some circles the last few weeks, the possibility became public when general manager Dave Gettleman was asked about wide receiver Steve Smith’s roster status Thursday at the NFL Combine.

A restructuring is certainly possible, but so is a clean break. It’s not something Smith or Panthers fans have thought possible, but the days of seemingly unending loyalty are gone.

The role of a general manager is to build a team that can win. Gettleman and Rivera’s roles, more specifically, are to build a team that can win consistently. Doing either is neither easy nor pretty.

Uncomfortable decisions can be ugly at first, but they’re necessary in the NFL, even if they mean a change in what loyalty necessarily means.

I've been thinking for awhile that there's a good chance Smitty retires. If he's cut I think he'll definitely just go ahead and retire rather than uproot his family just to play somewhere else for 1 year.

I think he'd rather get cut first. If he retires as a Panther, he has to pay back part of the remaining on his bonus money left. If he's cut, he doesn't.

Asked Bill to put a percentage on it.

@billvoth Let's put a Steve Smith percentage on this, what would you put the percentage at for him being cut? lol

@Carpanfan96 ha, i’ll put a 70% on it right now. gross retirement is a 98.

@billvoth Whoa, surprised at how high the Smith percentage is. Wow!

@Carpanfan96 yeah, but still decent wiggle room there. the main point: this is more possible than anyone has imagined. stay tuned.

Yeah... I'm sorry but no way in hell would Jerry Richardson let that happen.

DG is being politically correct (which is great because it gives him traction with agents), but at the end of the day there is not a snow ball's chance in hell that Steve Smith is cut.

It might be more of a "hey we could cut SS, what make you so special?" message to other players,

it has nothing to do with "loyalty."

it has everything to do with cutting a productive player when he is quite literally the only player under contract at his position. it woul be the ultimate sign tha gettleman doesnt know what he's doing.

now this is more than likely nothing more than a power play to entice Smith into taking a pay cut so i wont get up in arms about it, nor do i expect richardson to even allow him to be cut.
