If Smitty is "evaluated" and not on this team next yearn

WOW!!

smart teams do not pay based on past history, what are you going to do for us now and in the future. to owens, jerry rice, and randy moss could still catch a pass for ONE play, but what about the next one? or next week? you dont hold value on the side lines or in the ice tub.

All this is telling me, is that DG wants SS to restructure, or risk getting cut.

I think that Big Cat, RR, DG, and SS all want SS to be with the Panthers, but at a "normal" cost per year for an old WR.

They are just getting the word out to Smitty, so he can start to think about it.

There's a lot of stir over what he said, but I really just think he only said that to stay consistent with everything else he has been saying, which is all being said to just get the media off of his back. I don't think there is any slim chance Steve isn't on the team next season.

Agreed.

His salary this year is 4 million and next it is 7 million and the year after 9 million. If  no one wants to pay him 4 now how does he think he will be worth more each of the next 2 years while his  production is dwindling.

I thought he was getting 7 mil next year. He has a 3 mil option.

You definitely keep him at 4 but 7 is too high.

His Cap hit is 7 million next season, 10 million the season after, then 12 million in 2016. His Option bonus adds the 2016 season and 3 million in bonus money over the next 3 seasons.

Smith is the greatest panther in team history. And even that does not grant him a roster spot until he decides he wants to retire. He will be 35 before OTA's, unfortunate he's playing like a 35 year old. He is just not worth the big money anymore. Thank goodness we have a GM that will make decisions based on what's best for our team. Sometimes tough decisions will have to be made. Gentleman has always said he cannot and will not allow emotions to factor in on his decision making process.

Yes, Steve is the best receiver on our team. And that is our problem. A 5'9" 35 year old is our best receiver. Need we say more. He is no longer a #1 receiver...not a successful one anyway. How can we compete with this scenario? We can't! We play in a division that has Julio, roddy white, Vincent Jackson and all the saint receivers...we pull up with Steve smith...we can't continue to improve our position in the league with our current receiver line up. If we want to get more mileage out of Steve he must be moved to the slot position. We need to bring in a big, quick sure handed receiver at the number one . Our complementary receivers and plenty good enough at #3... Don't forget the possibility that mcnutt and king are promising emerging players. Please don't get me wrong steve smith is one of my favorites. But sometimes you have to face reality and be proactive. Our goal is a championship right... Continuous team improvement is the only way.

Getting rid of Smith would make our best receiver on the roster McNutt....Is that better to you? It's not all about talent, Steve brings veteran leadership, that without, we would've been 8-8 or worse. We won the division last year with our defense, and I think that's the #1 priority. Look at my other posts, you'll see that I want Benjamin in round 1 and if a guy like Cooks is there in the 2nd then we double up at WR, but getting rid of Smith would not help a goddamn thing, it would hinder all of our success. I agree him at the slot, Benjamin at #1 and then a guy like Matthews or Cooks (if they somehow fell to us in the 2nd...) at #2 would be a perfect scenario. But, keeping Smith and improving the defense is more important in my opinion. If we can do both, great.. If not, we gotta keep Smith.
