If you look at Smitty's production and compare it to his salary, he is underperforming. Gettlemen is not aftraid of getting rid of Steve Smith. He has done it before in NY.

I wonder what JR would say about it?

I think JR wants Super Bowl plus loyalty screwed panthers big time. JR is a businessman and I don't think he will cry at night if Smitty is cut. He 'll probably send him a pie chart as explanation.

If you understand contracts and cap figures better than I do, correct my logic.  I got this from Rotoworld:

 

SMITTY--

4/10/2012: Signed a four-year, $37.75 million contract. The deal contains $16.8 million guaranteed, including a $10 million signing bonus and each of Smith's first three base salaries. 2014: $4 million (+ $3 million option bonus), 2015: $7 million, 2016: $9 million (Option Year), 2017: Free Agent

 

My assumptions:  Cutting him now means we don't pay the bonus and he would cost us about $6 million in dead money each of the next 2 years---if a June 1 cut.  I am assuming that he was paid $4 million of the guaranteed money in 2013, leaving about $12+ left.

 

If I am correct, cutting him costs us $6 million each of the next 2 years and keeping him costs us $7 million over the next 2 years, since 2016 is an option year.  I do not see the value in cutting him if my logic is accurate.

 

I do not see where we have much wiggle room or negotiating power.

Steve's production vs. Cap number does not look good for the Panthers. On the other hand when playoff time rolled around Steve was ready. Steve was dominant on a bum leg. Steve Smith's playoff numbers make Hall Of Famers hang their head in shame. We need him in the building. We need him in this City.

 

No, it really doesn't look good.

Gettlemen is going to make the tough decisions without emotions.  I would love to see Smitty move inside.

 

I read somewhere that Smitty's percentage of plays has been declining each year over the last three or so.  As good as he is for us, it was embarrassing how bad we were without him.

 

WR is going to be interesting this year.   I expect a TE and a WR in the draft, a free agent in March.  Throw in McNutt and King, and I think Gettlemen will feel that we have upgraded.

One he hasn't gotten the guaranteed salary, it's still paid the same way as regular salary except he gets the money even if he's cut.

The option bonus and option season are tied together. If the Panthers give him the bonus then he gets the 2016 season. If he doesn't get the option, the he has a non exercise fee of 3 million.

If he gets the fee then the 2016 year is voided and his cap hit goes up 500k in the next two seasons.

Cutting him saves 1 million this season, 4-6 million next season and 10 million in 2016.

I have to think that Gettlemen gives SS an ultimatum.  I don't think SS is going to give up that much.  Wow. 

 

The good news?  Cutting Smitty could save Hardy and make signing Cam easier.  It is smart, but hard to imagine.
