Thoughts on Martavis Bryant?

Even Sammy Watkins admitted his route running was shaky at best at Clemson, and this guy wasnt nearly as good as him.

He is like Tommy Streeter from Miami.

As a Clemson fan, I've watched both their whole careers. Bryant has all the potential in the world to be that next AJ Green, but he is way too inconsistent (right now) to be a day one dependable target. Honestly, he should have came back another year to progress, especially since Sammy always drew double teams. I see him being a less consistent Lafell, which is saying something. I'd take him in the 4th round, but no higher. He will be a project.

 

As to Sammy and all his screens...if you watch his tape, there s no denying he received a fair amount of screens, especially in the Orange Bowl. It is a part of Chad Morris' offense to keep the outside defenders honest. But you go back and watch virtually any game he played, he was down field at least 10 yards getting his yards. Even from his freshman year, he could take a quick 7-10 yard pass to the house (see 2011 vs Auburn, 2011 vs FSU). As for this past year, he would just BLOW by defenders (see 2012 vs. Wake Forest, this year vs. UGA, Syracuse, Maryland, Virginia, OSU I'm sure there's more) While not probable (especially with Gross retiring), trading our 1st and 2nd picks and maybe a late pick next year to get in that top 5 would be the best move to make. Sammy is something special. He is definitely a more pure receiver than Bryant, since having good hands is crucial to being a solid WR (which Bryant does not). Call me biased, I do not care he is going to be a monster. Look at how Atlanta trading up to get Julio Jones ended up. It's time to take chance on a potential superstar rather than sit back and get some "pretty good" players.

I saw him against NC State, so I saw his best game, but I've liked him ever since. We saw with Ginn that Cam can make a receiver dangerous even if speed is his only real asset, and Bryant has that. His vertical makes him look like a jump ball guy, but he's not strong enough to really go get the ball, not yet anyway. Pretty much a physical match for Jordan Matthews (Matthews is stronger, Bryant jumps better). He'd be a project, but I'd be happy to get him on the roster.

Gonna go ahead and bump this thread. This kid needs to be talked about more. I really do think he could be the steal of the draft.

More to being a receiver in the NFL than height and speed. If you cannot run crisp routes, good hands, and have the ability to separate it spells a marginal WR in the NFL .I do not know if that is the case here but I smile when I see speed and height mentioned so often

Bryant and RIchardson are the two receivers I don't really want in the draft.  Meh

Agree with your assessment on Bryant. No higher than the 4th, he will need a lot of work. More importantly, he needs a team that is going to give him time to develop and not force him into a role he isn't prepared for too early. He's not even close to being as ready as Nuke was and Sammy is in my opinion. Shocked he didn't stay one more year.

I think Sammy will be very good but I don't think our situation on the o-line is conducive to us trading up in the draft. We need lots of cheap young talent this year and this draft fits our needs like a glove. And going from 28 to 2 would require our 1, 2, and next year's one at the very least - likely more in huge way of mid round picks. No player is worth that outside of a QB.
