Gettlemen Combine interview

Smith would only get cut if A. He wants to retire. B. He wants to make a run with Brady and the Patriots.

I don't see Smith not being amendable to a restructure or pay cut. I think DG is just displaying his hard nose swag right now.

I think if the team is going to cut him, they'll ask him if he wants to retire. He's at the age where he's probably seriously thinking about it. If he doesn't, then it becomes a much tougher decision.

Smitty will be 35 years old going into next season. he still displayes the toughness ,but his abbilities have fallen off the last 2 seasons. i love the man but he will be done soon. this is why WR is the biggest need. we are right there with the jags and jets when it comes to the recieving corps. something has to change. and change now. we can easily be worse on O even with Smitty on the team.

Heck, I'd argue the Jags have a better receiving corps than we do. Blackmon + Shorts is superior to any combo we could put on the field at the moment.

the decision to keep or let smitty go has to go beyond the emotional side.

releasing him june 1 frees up a lot of very needed cap space, but then who is going to be your main receiver? i don't care what gettleman says....this answer is NOT on our roster.

the upside is that there is a good bit of available guys even in FA who would help fill that void and there are some definite stars in the making that will be available in the draft.

i'm sure smith won't be upset by getting cut. i don't see him wanting to go anywhere else. i think the choices will be to retire or take a huge pay cut. it all depends on if he feels he has more in him or not. i think he and smith are feeling old and the wise thing might be for them to get out while they are still healthy.

if we are without smith, it will be a sad day, but one i'm sure we all knew was coming at some point. the decision to cut sucks because that sure isn't how i saw him leaving, but because of hurney magic, this is before us. the decision won't be easy and it puts us behind the 8 ball and forces our energies towards finding his replacement...which is something we should have been trying to do long before now.

Agreed. I think the money saved by releasing Smith or asking him to take a massive pay cut would be better served signing someone along the lines of Maclin and then drafting a receiver + tight end early in the draft. That way we get more bang for our buck, get younger at the position, and are better built for the future going forward.

It's easy to be casual about the notion of cutting Steve Smith in the offseason. But if we do so, and our offense is even worse in the upcoming season, this place will be unbearable. Even with the cap space it may save, I don't see Gettleman bringing in a high price receiver in FA.

The best scenario would be to approach Steve, and see if he would be willing to take a pay cut, or restructure.

Regardless, the ultimate goal needs to be acquiring a younger WR that Cam can grow with. This should have already happened.

Smitty hit the wall... From now on he will be no more than 500-700 yard a season guy. If u want to pay him top 5 WR money than u an idiot. I love Smitty but this is a lot of money we don't have.

I agree

But you turn every fugingstone for every fuging dime and dollar before you even begin thinking about cutting Smitty. So as long as there is money to be found on other players contracts, I have no problem giving Smitty his thing though he is not producing his worth.

If you cut the best Panthers ever and still give Godfrey 1 single dollar then you should be fired
