Why is so many hell bent to find another Smitty 2.0?

There are PLENTY of good, bigger, fast receivers in this draft, that we shouldn't have to settle for a short receiver.

It was NEVER intended for Steve Smith to be our best receiver when he was drafted. We got lucky.

Is the only reason i'm greatful for George Seifert.

If cooks is the best receiver when we pick then he should be the wr we chose. It's nothing about comparing him to smitty. If he has the skill set to be a number 1 receiver than that's the reason we should choose him.

This is a rel deep class and honestly I can see him "falling" to us.

now ignoring the two going in the top 10 (Watkins and Evans) the other First round WRs are probably Cooks, Beckham, Benjamin, Matthews an Moncrief in that order. Ebron is probably the only TE going before any of those guys.

Now counting teams not in the Top 10, there's only 3 teams ahead of us I see taking a WR:

St. Louis, NYJ and KC.

So there's a huge chance Matthews is on the board by the time we pick.

Those 3 are certainly looking to add a receiver in the first. Then you have teams like Detroit, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cleveland, and New Orleans that are also looking for receivers as well. I'm hoping they address other needs and allow the third or fourth best receiver in the draft to get to us at 28. I think the Jets will take Ebron.

Yeah, this is probably what the Chicago Bears were thinking when they made David Terrell the 1st WR off the board in 2001. Afterall, he was 6'2" 216. That looks good on paper, right? Same with the Seahawks when they took Koren Robinson with the next pick at #9. 6'1" 205. Then the Washington Redskins took Rod Garder at #15. 6'2" 219.

Some 5'9" 184 runt of a punt returner went in the 3rd round #74 overall in that same draft. Think those teams would've chose differently if they could rewind the clock?

Ironically, three of the best WRs in that class measured in at less than 6' tall - Smitty, Santana Moss, and Chris Chambers.

lol.

You act like I hate small receivers.

great small receivers are the exception to the rule. I don't think the panthers want to take a risk on the assumption....especially in the first round.

Detroit is gonna take Mike Evans most likely. Everyone saw what happened when Johnson went down.

Pittsburg needs to get younger on defense. They have the oldest secondary in he NFL. And while they need a replacement for Sanders who is likely walking, they really can't afford to ignore an edge rusher like Dee Ford if he's there, or a top DB over someone like Lee, Beckham or Cooks.

Baltimore is almost a guarantee to take a WR.I forgot about them.

Cleveland might with their second pick. I'm still not sure the new GM is gonan take one of the top QBs and he might be the one who takes Watkins @ 5. If they don't I can see them going with someone like Cooks at 25.

NO I just don't see taking a WR early on. I think they think Brees can make any WO look competent and they're right. They'll probably take an actual OLB with their pick, seeing as how they run the 3-4 now.

Looking forward to the DBs tomorrow. More interested in them than the WRs honestly.[/quote

Highly intrigued in the versatile WR converts like McGill and Jean-Baptiste.

Also high on Breeland and Belue.

Just crazy to think that the Panthers could come out of this draft taking nothing but athletic freaks to surround our core players and be the youngest and most versatile ball team in the league.

Imagine adding 6'5 WR Benjamin, a stud OT like Moses, Mewhort or James...a 6'3 CB (McGill or Jean-Baptiste,) along with a traditional CB plus a versatile 3-4 LB/DE like Demarcus Lawrence.

All of a sudden this team becomes titans amongst a league of giants and all of them are full of youth with serious mean-streaks. Uber-physical with lots of range and versatility.

I agree that great small receivers are the exception to the rule, but I want good football players period.  I don't want to overlook a great player because he doesn't have ideal measurables.  Who knows, maybe the Panthers aren't interested in Cooks at all.

Yeah good call on the Steelers almost needing to go defense. I think they would be very happy with GIlbert/Dennard or a pass rusher. For some reason though, I always feel like they are drafting offense offense offense for the last few years. They could use a tight end too and would be a fit for Ebron if he is still on the board there.

I think Cleveland takes a WR with at least one of their picks. It would be better for us if they managed to get Watkins and could take a QB like Carr with their second pick in the first round.

As for New Orleans...hard to say. They definitely need a linebacker, and could use some more talent in the secondary or an offensive linemen.

Now that I really think about it I think we have a good chance to land the likes of Cooks, Beckham, Benjamin, or Matthews. One of them should be on the board when we are on the clock.

Baltimore and Pittsburgh are both BPA teams. If Evans gets passed Detroit, I can see either of them picking him up. Would they pick Marqise Lee though? I really don't think so. 1) There will be players rated higher, and 2) both teams want big-bodied receivers.

I also visited some Saints forums and the cry for OLB isn't half as dire as the media makes it out to be. They've got Junior Gallette, and they can generate plenty of pressure with Cam Jordan. Their second WR was Kenny Stills who only had 641 yards this year. They're not gonna give up on him, but it's not like they can't do with an upgrade. Payton loves the deep passing game and would love a toy like Lee or Cooks.

Moncrief doesn't play at 4.3 speed either, and I'm a huge fan of his.

i think he plays at 4.4 speed. Hugh Freeze has said numerous times that he was the most athletic and fastest player on the Ole Miss team. plus when he sees green, nobody has caught him from behind, even if they had angles. in the LSU game he out ran a perfect angle from Eric Reid on a slant. his play is 4.4 like he ran.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
