The Official NFL Combine Thread

Drafting a WR at #28 is looking less and less likely as we could get equal value in the later rounds due to the depth at WR.

OL and DBs are becoming hotter commodities due to rarity. Moses, Amaro, Pryor, Yankey, Verret, Mewhort (stock rising.)

Even with the stock rising, the only guy you listed that would be a first round pick and a OT, would be Moses.

Jordan Matthews is the most intriguing/puzzling prospect to me. I was impressed by his 40 time, so I went to watch some more cut-up tapes of him. My conclusion: he is fast with the ball in hand, but struggles to get separation on his routes. Now, the majority of his catches were from screens and hooks, so maybe it's just a matter of running his deep routes better. Still, Rivera has said that they want rookie WR's that are polished route runners. Who knows where he'll be taken.

About Cooks--

He is so polished. He catches the ball cleanly, runs good routes, explodes out of the break....Aside from his size, I can find nothing wrong with him.  If here were a six footer and added 20 lbs, he would be the best WR in the draft--or second best.  He is that good.

I was thinking it was his first step headed into today, but they didn't show his split for some reason. At least not one that I saw posted during his two times. Taller guys usually have route running problems as well, it's just harder to plant and change direction when you're 6-4 and 220 compared to a 5-11 190-200 ilb guy.

It amuses me how the first thing to discredit Lee as a worthy pick for the Panthers is the emblem on his element. You guys never disappoint.

Would be ecstatic if we're able to get Lee at 28. My only major worry is he body catches a lot.

Logan Thomas Imo is now a 3rd or 4th round guy. I highly doubt some team is bold enough to take a gamble on him higher. If you can draft him with an established vet you can do one of 2 things now: continue development as a Qb or switch him to Te. He just physically is too gifted to slip past 4 and has a great work ethic. Look at his numbers today and go look up the Te group from yesterday. He sits right there with everyone else yet he is taller than them.

Dude us a project with great upside and seams to be motivated. Question remains: will he be open to switching to Te.

I'm on board the Beckham train in the 2nd but he won't be there. Not sure if he is a 1st rounder on production either. He would be a gamble Imo but if we somehow get into the top of the 2nd round he has to be the guy other than....

Matthews just made the covet list. Guy is Keenan Allen from last year under rated athlete that is so smooth you think he must just be a technician only. Unlike the next 2 guys listed he showed me in the 40 time he can get vertically down field for a good 15+ yards after he gets separation. He isn't gone once he gets it but he has wheels to maintain till he completes a fairly deep route.

Robinson probably needs a good product to stay in the in 2nd round for some. The long speed questions got louder today. Every think else points to top flight #2 but it's going to be able to either take the top off the defense or be effective against most #1 CBs.

Same can be said for Adams. Great #2 but can he out keep separation once he gets it. That's that more what I see out of the 40 times. Everything else for he and Robinson point to short yardage specialists that will have to make there game about strength and hard breaks to get separation as the ball is in the air. Both I think can find a great role here but not worth of our 1st and good not great 2nd round picks. Still worthy of it no doubt but not the true #1 guys.

Moncrief just flat out dominated today in the underwear Olympics. That's not to say he is just an athlete as he took it to a lot of teams in 12 but the performance drop off really makes you wonder. I will say he is my favorite WR athletically and I can see him dominate at time like Patterson did for Minnesota late but is he worth a 1st. He should be gone before our 2nd.

Cooks I think is not there when we pick. The size question will follow him until he produces in the NFL. Otherwise we should be talking about top half of the 1st round for the best collegiate WR last year. If he is there and no OT is worthy I take him or look at against the BPAs and likely select him.

Lee is also worth of our 1st if only he played for a major team not named USC. He answered all questions today save 1: durability. Otherwise 28 in this draft is about right. I would not be surprised to see him gone before Cooks but I think Cooks is better.

Someone asked how this class of wr stack up. I have 2 that i would look at after Evans and Watkins: Allen and Patterson top the rest of this class. Go back and look at Patterson numbers from his combine. As for Allen he just should have done the wait game and not run before training. He wasn't 100% and it killed his stock.

I agree with Allen but Patterson doesn't have any of the production a lot of these WR'S have 2 or 3 years of nor did Patterson have as much flim as a lot of these kids have.

I would have at least 10-12 of these guys over Patterson.

The more I think about it, the more I feel like Matthews will be the pick if he's there.

  • Big Guy, Gettleman loves his Big Guys.
  • 4 year starter in the SEC. Can come in and help us instantly.
  • Solid route runner.
  • Smart, hard worker. Film rat.
  • Adjusts greatly. Goes up and gets the ball. Can get YAC.

I honestly see us going with him over any other WR rn. DB/BPA in second and O-line depth in later rounds.

Right? He should just say he played for Cal and people would be saying the panthers can't pass on him. He is world's better than the last 10 years of USC receivers.

After how he ran today I just hope he's still on the board at 28. I'll be heated if the Saints take him one pick ahead of us.

Moncrief just Heward-Bey'ed the combine today.

Similar college production although Darius was a bit more productive which is alarming about Moncrief.

Brandon Cooks, Lee, Watkins really stood out today..Jordan Matthews looked the part and Allen Robinson was up n down.

Some really good late gems (4th-6th) that looked good with speed will be Gamecock Bruce Ellington, Albert Wilson from GSU hoth looked like natural WRs with crazy agility.

Unlike his teamate ACE Sanders who was explosive in college and came on late last season for Jacksonville Bruce Ellington provided the measurables at the combine to go along with his production on the field.

In the last hour I’ve learned much more on the injury which kept Austin Seferian-Jenkins from working out yesterday. It was an injury medical examiners at the combine accidentally found. Doctors x-rayed Seferian-Jenkins left foot with the sole intention of examining the ankle which he sprained a year ago and kept him on the sidelines during a small portion of the 2012 season. In reviewing the x-rays doctors noticed what seemed to be a potential small fracture in the foot and ordered more tests. I’m told Seferian-Jenkins was getting ready to take the field for his workout when he was pulled from the line and told additional tests were needed. The big tight end was as surprised as anyone as he’d never experienced pain in his left foot to that point. Seferian-Jenkins combine weight of 262-pounds is a number significantly lower than his playing weight of 2013. I’m told Seferian-Jenkins had been timing in the 4.6’s during recent training.

12PM

-  Word around Indy is Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Jonathan Martin will eventually be traded but its a question of when.  Someone close to the situation told me yesterday, “there are a lot of moving parts.”  I get the idea everyone wants to make sure they are covering their you know what.

-  Blake Bortles officially announced Monday he would throw at the combine but  I was told the strong arm quarterback decided long ago he would participate in the entire combine workout.  Throwing at the combine was never a question in Bortles’ mind.

- I’m told the Cincinnati Bengals may have to cut Carlos Dunlap in order to create the salary cap room necessary to sign a number of other highly considered players on their roster about to hit free agency.

- The feeling from the combine says the Atlanta Falcons have a 50/50 chance of re-signing starting center Joe Hawley.

- LaMarr Woodley’s contract s likely to make re-signing Jason Worilds very difficult if not impossible.  I’m told at least at least a dozen teams here at the combine have expressed great interest in Worilds if he hits free agency.

-   In conversations here in Indy its apparent the quarterbacks stack up 1) Bortles, 2) Bridgewater, 3) Carr, 4) Manziel on a number of team boards.

- Last night at dinner with a few scouts I learned that an FBI profiler was brought in to review the interview tapes of Aaron Hernandez from the 2010 combine.  The profiler pointed out a number of signs during the interview which would’ve raised red flags had he seen it in 2010; body language, the way Hernandez answered questions, his body language answering questions.  Bottom line is more teams will bring in profilers to review these interview tapes.

@TDavenport_BSN: Just spoke with EJ Gaines. He went vs Mike Evans and Jordan Matthews. Said Matthews was the best he's faced.

Think I'm going to go back and really take another look at Matthews. Big hands, ran a good 40 at 4.46, actually 6'3", 35" vert. Seperation is the big issue with him.

I like EJ Gaines. Good prospect for the 3rd-4th round with upside.
