Schefter: 2014 cap rising 5% to 130 million (extra 7 million for us to spend)

You guys throw around the June 1st cut like its the most amazing salary cap saving ever. It is short term for teams who are in terrible shape.

For example designating Charles Johnson as a June 1 cut gains us $8M in 2014, another $8M in 2015 and $12M in 2016. It is by far the best financial option with him unless we decide to keep him.

When we project cap numbers isn't that assuming Gross is off the books as a FA? He graded out as a top 5 tackle. Any money from the cap going up is gonna go to him on a one year deal if he decides to play, and if he doesn't we are an 8-8 team at best when we score 10 points a game so all this is kinda bumming me out.

 

I think it assumes all of our free agents are off the books

Why are we going to cut CJ again?  He's only 27, and been one of the most consistant DEs in the NFL over the past 4-5 years...  Sure he's expensive, but can he be replaced if Hardy decides he wants to take his talents to some team for $20 million a year?  I just don't get it.  Hardy could be better, but CJ was extremely before Hardy...

 

Where's CJ's replacement?  Not to mention, the Falcons would love to bring CJ in to improve their pass rush, local boy, and who would kill the Panthers...  So why are we so obsessed with cutting our BEST DE since Peppers (over several seasons).

^^^^ totally agree. And with how gettleman has spoken whenever asked he's signalled towards getting clear of the cap within two years all being well! Am I correct?, so I don't see him pushing it over a year to benefit this year because you basically just carry on poor money management whereas he wants a healthy cap with players signed to longer term deals and not have to worry about lots of FA in the offseason and cap mess.

Gettleman doesn't really have a choice but to keep some players and push cap down the line until he is rid of some of these big contracts.  For example in 2014 we are looking at 17 million in dead cap space of which half is 8 million we owe when we traded Beason.  We also have 5 million in dead money when Gross's contract voided.  I am hoping that if we resign him we can work that dead money into his new contract and get that back.  But for example if we cut Godfrey given he had an achilles injury he has a cap hit of 7 million if we keep him but a dead cap hit of 5 if we cut him.  Gettleman may need the relief of a june 1 cap designation so instead of saving 2 million we can save almost 5.  That 3 million is more needed now than next year or the year after when they big contracts  start to roll off the books.

That does nothing with the dead money tho. That is just his salary in those years you are taking off the books. 

 

8 mil is a solid deal for 2014 and 2015. 

 

If you were to cut him it would in essence cost a whole lot more toward the salary cap. 

 

Look at it like this. Your going to pay the man 5 mil in 2014 and 2015 no matter what. It has been prepaid in the form of a bonus. If you cut him he is still getting paid 5 mil but he doesnt earn his 8 mil salary for that year. 

 

The REAL question is CJ worth 8 mil in 2014 and 2015. That bonus money (5mil) has already been paid so that part of the dead money never goes away.

Johnson costs us 16 million in cap space in 2014 which goes up to over 17 million in 2015.  Cutting him save 8 million in cap space in 2014 and 9 million in 2015.  That is including the dead money it costs to cut him minus his cap hit.  At this point salary isn't the issue, cap space is.

No it doesn't work that way because salary isn't how players are kept or cut but rather their cap hit.  When we sign Newton to a long term contract and pay him a 30 million signing bonus we pay the whole 30 million upfront so his salary is actually all of that and his actually salary that is negotiated which if it were 2 million the first year would put his actual money received at 32 million in the year he signed the contract. That is his actual salary in 2014.  But his cap hit on a 6 year contract would be 7 million which is 5 million pro-rated bonus and 2 year salary for a total of 7 million in 2014.

 

You wouldn't look at his 32 million salary and ask if he were worth that but the 7 million cap hit.  Players are cut not because of their salaries but due to their cap hits.

It sucks to get injured but that is what football is all about.  It sucks it cost us 8 million in dead cap space to trade beason.  It sucks we paid him a ton of money to sit the bench the last 2 years.
