Gil Brandt: Top Six Franchise Builders

Cary Kollins

Recommended Posts

Hey two out of six, not too shabby.

"If I were constructing a franchise from scratch today, which young NFL star would I pick to be the cornerstone of my team?"

2) Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers
The talented Newton has excellent arm strength and can make all the throws -- and, like Luck, he's a hard worker, a very competitive person. Newton also showed in 2013 that he has outstanding leadership abilities, helping to shepherd the Panthers to a 12-4 finish and a playoff berth after a 1-3 start. Through three seasons in the NFL, the quarterback has improved significantly, partially by virtue of gaining experience, something Newton did not have much of after spending just one full season as a starter at Auburn.

6) Luke Kuechly, LB, Carolina Panthers
Kuechly might be a bit of a reach here in that it would be tough to justify starting a franchise with a linebacker, but I have to include him simply because of how he makes everyone around him better. He has great lateral movement for the position, and he's a tackling machine; he's the reason that the Panthers' defense is as good as it is. Kuechly is the Brian Urlacher of his generation, and you want guys like that on your team.

It's a good time to be a Panthers fan. Some of us forget just how lucky we are.

I saw a guy at the Doctor this morning, he had on a Seattle Seahawks knit hat...a new Seattle Seahawks knit hat. Probably wasn't a month old....I told him he jumped on the wrong bandwagon.

gil brandt was one of the biggest proponents of cam newton pre-draft. tbh, he sold me on newton's intangibles more than anyone.

i'm sure seattle fans will be crying about no russel wilson but....waaaahhhh.

I'm sure if it were a "Top Six Game Managers" list, Wilson would be top 2.

When I read other message boards, I came across all Viking fans saying the wish they would have taken Luke over Matt Kalil, and two different Viking fans (on two different boards) said they would be interested in bringing Jimmy Clausen aboard. THAT is how lucky we truly are.

    • Film Room Playlist _ NFL Pro — Mozilla Firefox 2024-11-25 10-20-11.mp4 🎯🎯🎯 There were a couple of "fans" yesterday saying that this wasn't a helmet-to-helmet shot... 👀 Looks like based on where Moore was and where the play ended, he'd have gotten maybe just a yard or two more. Chuba was downed at the KC 16 and Moore was on his way back to the QB, so the offense got what they could for the most part. After reviewing the all-22, Bryce made the right call here. Tremble was the hot and KC sent both LBs. He gets it out with a clear pocket but it's quickly collapsing. If there was a little more time it looked like AT came free at the end but whether or not Bryce would've been upright still is another story. Smart move to get the completion and keep the field goal in play to stay alive. George Karlaftis is about to get himself a big ole hug and Bryce heaves it to where David Moore is going. Trent McDuffie slipped just a step or two before this shot, but we can see the clear DPI here as he's wrapped around David Moore before knocking him over as the ball gets there.
    • I’m taking a TE early day 3 Ian Thomas and Tremble are FA.  We should have no desire to bring them back.   There’s more than enough film of ball bouncing off their hands or facemask.
    • Daniel Jones sometimes would sling it for 300 or 400 yards.  That's my stance.  We know what Bryce is.  If you consistently play any QB at this level, they largely are going to end up w/ some good days/games.  last time Mahomes was at BOA, Teddy Bridgwater threw for 300+ yards and a couple TDs and the Matt Rhule Panthers almost took him down.  We know what Bryce is.  Now we got people predictably falling into a predictable trap.
