I know many are saying taking 2OL early but I am concerned about drafting guys and starting them on the OL as rookies.  Almost all O linemen need at least a year to develop. Look at Silatolu his rookie year.  He was a big reason we struggled in 2012 on offense.  With him coming back and the other guys off IR returning, our OL won''t  be as bad a some think.  I would like to draft a few OL but not in the first 2 rounds and as developmental guys not instant starters.  Unless of course Gross doesn't come back and we can't find reasonably priced replacements in FA at right tackle and we are forced to go that route in the draft.  Still we are then drafting for need not BPA and that is the kind of think we did with Brown a few years ago at DE and we see how that turned out.

but that shouldnt be a reason to not take OL talent if the value is there. for every Amini, you got a Travis Frederick or Cordy Glenn ( Bills took him right after the panthers selected Amini) that had decent rookie years seasons. plus Amini came from D2 so there was a huge jump in competition, but any rookie takes time to develop.

I understand what you are saying.  However, I want an OL in the 2-3 round....future LT.

re-sign Gross to play LT....let the new guy play RT (send Bell's ass to the bench).  Then shift him to LT when Gross retires.

We need a starter....not another development guy.  We have plenty of those.

The thing is that I think most eventual  OL starters start off as developmental guys on good teams.  On bad teams they get thrown in there and struggle for a year or two.  Top 15 guys start right away and some hold their own but the further down the draft, the more likely they need polishing.

If an oline is BPA then take him for sure.  But don't take him because he is who you need at our pick.  When we were picking top 15 you could be assured you were getting a starter.  The further you go down the list the more question marks.  I would rather get the 2nd best corner for example versus the 8 best OL if all things are equal. Of course if the 8th best olinemen is better relatively than the second best corner then you go with the lineman.

You have a point.

However, with the depth at OT in this draft and the fact that Bell sucks, I would like to see a starter at RT come out of the draft.

I would like an eventual starter as well.  But I would like to sign a FA right tackle to start right away and work the draftee into the mix.  I am tired of having holes on the o line because we have rookie starting who is a liability for a year or longer.  That might have been okay in 2012 when we were building a team but now we need starters who can play at a high level right away.

i wouldn't be a bit surprised to see us double dip at OT and WR (or pick up a WR and a TE like ASJ).

this draft is stacked and deep and i could easily see things falling where the BPA could very well be something that we've drafted a round or two earlier.

FA will be very importaint this year because it will carve out our draft. I would love if we picked up some inside help for Cam and a CB or WR. I think we will get to see really how good DG is this year at manerveing in FA and the Draft to set us up as a playoff team.

Cyrus Kouandjio will drop and I hope we don't take him.  Overrated.  Bell struggled with speed rushers in the NFL last year.  Kouandijo struggled with speed rushers in college.

If a true stud OT drops to us in the first that can play RT this year and eventually replace Gross, then maybe.  Besides, I would like to see Bell move inside.  However, this is a great draft for skill positions.  A stud TE to put with Olsen and run more 2 TE sets would be tough.  Significant upgrades at WR and CB would instantly make us better.

For the first time in years, the draft is stacked in our areas of need.  With a little luck, we could get starters in rds 1-3 in areas of need ... while still picking best player available.

    • I mean it's not even like this was his worst game of the season... I'm not done with him by any means but this feels more the norm for him than the exception:/
    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
