Back in your "glory days"...

Mr. Scot

I think the greatest moment in my sports career came when I beat my black friend's dad in a game of one-on-one basketball at a court in downtown Atlanta. All the people watching were calling me the "White Larry Bird". I just got lucky and shot well from the perimeter. He was 6'4 and I'm 6' and he had at least 50lbs on me. No way I was driving on him so I had to just shoot three's.

The "White Larry Bird"? Isn't Larry Bird white?

I was a decent basketball player in my high school days...especially considering I never started playing until grade 11 and I grew so damn fast that I was incredibly uncoordinated and thin as a rail.  I was pretty much unstoppable in the lower key though.

I assumed you were born tall.

Baseball played 3 years of varsity. I was a late bloomer 5' 01" my freshman year then shot up. Played 3rd base, left field, and started pitching my senior year. Ended up getting a scholarship for pitching in college.

Probably the greatest game I pitched was in legion complete game shutout, 3 hits 8 ks. Struck out the last batter swinging( he was the home run king of the legion league.

I didn't throw very hard but I prided myself on hitting my spots, and my curveball was tits. I showed up for high school pitcher workouts in the winter time my senior year without telling my coach and when I showed up he said " what are you doing here?" " I ended up all-conference, all area, and all region hm. Had a 1.2 era with a ridiculous strikeouts per inning.

nope....well...let me clarify...I was born tall...but I was average height growing up.  I left grade 9 average and left grade 10 the tallest person in my town of about 3700 people!!!!

I don't allow my son to drink caffeine, lol.  I blame that for me not reaching 6 foot.  All of my uncles and both grandfathers (maternal and paternal) are over 6 foot tall.  I have one uncle that is 6'5" and another 6'4".  My dad was 5'8" or so.  I'm 5'10", and I was sub 5 foot until 9th grade.

Football & Wrestling. I was a little speedy, wirey guy.

Due to an unusual mass of injuries on varsity, I got bumped from JV to play corner back. Since I was fast & have long ass monkey arms, turned out to be pretty good. Also played WR & tailback on occasion. When at WR I was known as "The Littlest Lineman" because were rarely passed & I was 5' 5" 119lbs.

Wrestling was fun. I was ok, won a few tournaments.

Best moment was a Phil McConkey like TD that bounced off 3 other people on one of our few passing plays

I have tons of incredible stories related to my athletic accomplishments though, I just gave a synopsis of my sports biography instead.

One time, in weight lifting, we had a bunch of the guys from the football team in there, and the coach was doing something else, so we started playing tackle (which we weren't supposed to).  I was probably around 5'7" 145 lbs. at the time.  I'm telling you, everywhere I played, I was viewed as the white Steve Smith - our Steve Smith, not the broke down USC Steve Smith...  For my size I constantly shrugged off tackles like it was nothing.  I was good at using my leverage and always ran with a low center of gravity.

So, we start playing, and this one guy was new there.  A lot of our class thought he was on steroids.  The guy was yoked.  HUGE.  Probably 6'2", 260 lbs.,  athletic, and a beast on the weights.  So, we're playing, and I get to the edge, they overrun the play, and I cut back inside.  Somehow, it looked and felt almost like I ran through this one sliver of daylight, and it was like it widened as I went through it, to the point it felt like I was running between the Red Sea as Moses split it.  I'm blazing through there, racking up yards, and I got this feeling that something was coming...  The gigantor guy comes flying in full speed from my right, and is attempting to completely annhilate me.  He hits me with all he has, there was a loud, echoing slap and he hits me and falls back on the ground.  I kept running for like 10 more yards.  Everyone in there was going crazy screaming and jumping up and down.

I know it's generally lame to brag about non-padded football glory, but that goes down in the annals of non-padded football history as a hall of fame moment, IDGAF.

I had to guard Jerry Stackhouse once at Chavis Heights summer league in Raleigh (back then everyone from the ACC on tobacco road past, future, and present played in that league including the dudes in the NBA).

I had to guard Jerry Stackhouse who had just gone to the league at the time. I hit a floater over him and got an "and one" on him. Decided to let him.know about it a little (I was just a little cocky lol).

Yeah. Didn't work out too well. He dropped I believe 46 points on me after that. Including 4 threes in a row right in my face. On the last one for good measure I fouled the poo out of him. He still made it. Banked it in and called bank.

He never said a word to me. I trolled him the whole game just trying to get him to acknowledge me. He just ignored me like I wasn't even worthy to be on the same court as him.

It was way more demoralizing than a guy talking poo the whole game. I wasn't even worth his trash talk, lol.

He was a cool dude. I almost got him to laugh when I started cracking on his Fila shoes that he had an endorsement with at the time.

Maybe some bullet points on sports.

First game ever as a soccer player I was 10. Showed up during the first half and got a jersey during half time. Played the 2nd half and scored two goals.

Went on to score double digits in goals every year after except my last two where I played center half or sweeper or stopper and would always peg the other teams top scorer and shut them out.

Scored 6 once in a game.

Was playing fullback in a city all star game and took the ball from an opposing team near my own goal and dribbled the length of the field and went around I don't know how many guys to score the game winning goal. Keep in mind this was against many guys who later played D1 soccer.

Taught myself how to switch hit. Hit for the cycle in the same game I pitched a shutout.

When I coached I was and still the youngest coach ever to coach a city championship team. Only 20. The year we won I was the ONLY coach on the team coaching against grown men who had anywhere from 2-4 coaches. I kept the score book by telling a kid on the bench what to put in. E-5, K, etc.

I did something so innovative that I still don't think anybody has ever done. I had NO signals. I would tell guys before the game(12-14 yr olds) you have green light, you yellow and if you were red you did not steal period.

Coaches were always trying to steal my signals but there wasn't any.

Instead of batting practice I just worked on situational baseball. Day in, day out. We once had 3 straight games with NO errors. Which at that age was unheard of.

So what I did was since I wasn't doing signals, I would use the actual game to work on my kids mechanics for hitting. In real time. Because I know if I tell a kid to work on his balance on Monday he is not gonna remember that come Fri or Sat. He's a kid.

We were so far ahead of other teams they had no idea what we were doing. We stole 15-20 bases a game and were unstoppable.

At one point we won 18 straight games. We lost in the semi's the year after we won the championship to the eventual champion with only 8 players instead of 9. Simply put were were a powerhouse.

I have not coached since 1989 because I couldn't deal with the parents anymore. I believe out of all the things I'm good at or are passionate about, I was born to coach. I just know how to do it and reach even the hardest to reach kid.

*forgot. I played high school soccer but didn't play politics. I also wanted to party and i even partied too much for the soccer team who normally are known for wild guys at school.

I don't know if I would have played D1, I wasn't recruited but I'm sure I would have walked on. Got accepted to Arizona State and had I gone would have been a freshman Barry Bond's senior year but I just knew I would not have made it out alive. From partying, hooking up with chicks and gambling I would have either been killed by the mafia or ended up in Tijuana. No.I'm not exaggerating.

    • Paul  finebaum being completely embarrassed by saying Georgia Tech and then ACC is a joke.
    • The fact that Caleb acknowledges that they had one timeout before he goes into depth acting like he basically had no option but for a deep shot? lol.  I'm pretty sure the coach said the initial call was to try and get a little gain from an inbound pass and call time out so they could kick it at a little better distance. At the end of the day since Caleb was in over his head and panicking the coach should have called the time out and just tried the long field goal which I think would have been around 60 and even the screen flashed that their guy had kicked I think 64 yards before.
