Carolina Panthers Versus The South Part One: The New Orleans Saints.....

Nicks is physical that is true but that is pretty much it.

Nicks is a monster, you are right.

Jammal Brown is a very good left tackle because he can protect Bree's blind side but like Gross he is a better pass blocker than a run blocker. And that is 2 out of 5 guys. The rest are average to below average against the run.

Glad to see you ignored that stat. The Saints have the 2nd highest YPC running behind the left tackle(Brown). Yeah, he sucks at run blocking. Get real.

Here is what they said about Evans coming out of the draft in 2006.

"Jahri Evans does not have good footwork, making him not as productive as he is capable. Instead of sliding out to the corner in pass protection, Evans tends to stand up, turn and run to the corner to block wide rushers which gets him in trouble by edge rushers and by quick pass-rush moves back to the inside. Jahri pass blocks upright and high, does not fire-off the ball on run blocks and does not drive defensive linemen off the line of scrimmage. While he usually blocks well in space, he does get lazy at times, stops feet and leans to maintain contact and ends up falling off and losing block."

That's it! One scout said it so he'll never be a good run blocker. Nevermind that our YPC behind Jahri is 8th in the league. Ignore stats! Let's follow panther55's observations from two games a year.

Here's another scouting report:

Evans was a three-year starter at right tackle on the Division II level. He has experience at both tackle and guard, but projects strictly inside as a pro. He has a strong, wide base and the quickness on the snap to battle effectively as a drive blocker. Also has the ability to get a consistently powerful push. He is an aggressive, physical, strong run blocker who shows the power and agility to blow defenders off the line. In pass protection, he sets up quickly and gains proper positioning. Has the agility to slide and mirror defenders. He uses his strong base to stop bull rushers consistently.

Looking at the stats, who was right?

Seriously you can say all you want but no one outside of New Orleans would ever call your team a balanced attack or your line a good run blocking team. Get real.

I never said our team would be perfectly balanced, it doesn't have to. If they can keep up a 55/45% pass-run ratio they can beat anybody in the league That is the exact ratio for not only the 2006 Saints but the 1999 SB winning Rams.

Our line is very physical and can run block vs. anybody, we just need to keep getting Pierre Thomas the ball.

The runs behind Lt are a little bit skewed considering how little you run the ball...

No, it's not. Brown is a very good LT. Not that you were a fan or anything during 2005, but the Panthers were supposedly targeting Jammal Brown before we traded up.

I was pissed when we got stuck with TD...

Now im quite happy the way things turned out...

you wanna see a great beast Runblocker watch OTAH his man is 10 yards downfield EVERY play....

hate to break up this purse fight between a bunch of fagmos but the saints LT that Saint J says has the 2nd highest ypc in the nfl is actually 30th in ALY which is a much better stat for reasons I shouldn't have to explain to even someone as stupid as AK peace out and i get paid by clicks not by you people bitching about stupid poo

FWIW, I don't think Brown is the best lineman we have at all. Carl Nicks is and it's not even close, I was using DVR a bunch last year to go back and re-watch some of the pancakes he was laying out on a regular basis. Brown can only get better with a good guard on the side of him, though.

The 2008 Draft provided us with two lineman that can anchor both sides of the ball for years to come with Ellis & Nicks.

Now you're getting ahead of yourself, come on Brown has been doing it for a few seasons and Nicks just one. And it's not even close? You know the old saying, don't count the chicks before they hatch.

Our line is very physical and can run block vs. anybody, we just need to keep getting Pierre Thomas the ball.

Look at the football outsiders analysis on offensive lines in 2008.

When it comes to third down or fourth down and short or power success ranking- NO is 18th and the Panthers are 1st. That is a physical line.

New Orleans has a good adjusted ranking of 6th on the strength of Pierre and Bush not getting stuffed for losses which is the most heavily ranked category. Especially when their YPC carry is a pedestrian 4.37 versus the Panthers 5.01 YPC. And it is ranked 26th in run of 10 yards plus. The Panthers rank 1st again.

If you look at the league average in red at the bottom, NO is below the league average of 4.25 YPC (4.17) and below the average of successful power running (third and fourth and short) of 67% (64%).

High Adjusted Line Average suggest that the line doesn't get stuffed much but doesn't get a great push either. Runners get their yards and there aren't many negative plays but they struggle to run when teams know they are running or in short yardage or goal line situations. And a low success rate indicated they can't grind it out when they have to get 1 or 2 yards when they need it. Plus they suggest that a high adjusted average and low 10+ yards suggests that our running backs are better in the open field breaking long runs.

As I said NO is great in pass blocking and average in run blocking. And when they need to be physical they are below the league average.

As for individual guys here are the numbers for the Saints:

Left end- 14th

Left tackle- 2nd

Mid/Guard- 8th

Right Tackle- 10th

Right end- 27th

For the Panthers

Left end- 19th

Left tackle- 17th

Mid/Guard- 11th

Right tackle- 4th

Right end- 11th

THose numbers suggest that the left side for NO is much better than the right side. For the Panthers the right side is much better than the left side.

In summation the NO line is good on the left side although their overall YPC is below the league average. But they are not a power running team and struggle in third and fourth and short and goal line situations. Not what I call a physical line.
