Cam Newton Brings Out The Worst In Everyone

Oh, I think he has. Remember the issues some teammates had with him early on? By their own statement, he handled constructive criticism well and took what they had to say to heart.

I don't know that I've ever met a kid fresh out of college that didn't have at least some growing up to do. Newton may not have had as much as some thought, but I think even he himself would say he's not entirely the same guy now as he was then.

The article is about the media's reactions to Cam. And the term "maturity." They acted like he was some spoiled prima Donna bitch that finally matured. Everything I have heard was about how cam handled the media, that's what finally clicked and that's where we saw change. All the teammates I've heard say was he's the same guy as when he came here, prepares hard, first in first out, good teammate and had always had those leadership qualities. His maturation is football maturation not some child who grew up.

Of course people gain perspective as they grow older, but this is football. He has gained football perspective. Not character perspective.

Article makes too many excuses for Michael Vick.

Dan Reeves was arguably the best coach he had. Reality is he just wasn't (and isn't) a good passer.

Well, he wasn't a top notch passer by any means but he's had his good moments (see '10 eagles). And he elevated some really bad Atlanta teams as well, even if it was mostly due to his athleticism. All I'm saying is you could do much worse than a healthy Vick in his prime.

I think it's based on a false premise though, that Newton is still a cocky guy.  I don't see it, especially as compared to a guy like Kaepernick.

I think you and I will disagree on this one.

Cam had trouble handling losses, and his emotions following them.

He was basically made out to be a monster for it.

So he hates losing, how offensive.

It honestly should have never been summarize any differently than this.

The kid's ultra competitive playing a competitive sport, hates losing, and wears his emotions on his sleeve for better or worse. Creating a "Cam has immaturity issues" agenda is nothing but a ridiculous media spin.  I could never figure out what was worse....the ones writing it or the ones buying into it.

After the 9ers loss I had a guy write me telling me it's obvious Cam isn't ready to be an elite-level QB because when they were down 13 with 8 minutes left he was on the sidelines with a towel over his head looking defeated.  Seriously....could that comment be any more ESPN-fed?

what he managed to do in atlanta is especially interesting in light of the fact that he was barely paying attention to anything during his stint with the falcons per his later admission.  going off memory here but i think he even said that the first time he ever actually did an in-depth reading of a gameplan or was serious about doing film study on an opponent was under andy reid.

Listening to these national a-holes talk about Cam's "maturity issues" is one of the reason I've stopped watching ESPN and listening to those jerks.  It's bad enough to have to hear them slob all over Luck's, Wilson's, and RG3's knob, but to continue to sell the agenda against Cam is well beyond lame and so stereotypical.

I saw that SC clip when it first aired and I thought the same thing......the Panthers are winning now so all of a sudden Cam has a great attitude.  Get the FUG out of here ESPN.  Cam HAS absolutely matured this season.  However, the maturity has come with his play ON the field and not the fact that he likes to wear a damn towel over his head or that he takes losing badly.

the D has really matured also.

Ha your right, I glazed over it and kind of assumed what the article was about. Its actually the opposite of what I thought it was. Man I must be the biggest piece of trash moron ever to live, or am I just trying to get a rise out of all of you masterdebaters and holier than though because I went to college even though 49 percent of the country has guys?

Written like a well educated response should be...

It's sad to say, but there's still a double-standard applied to black quarterbacks.

Manning can tell the Colts he's gonna "kick their ass for the next 15 years if they don't draft him" and Brady can tell the Pats owner that drafting him is "the best decision they've ever made" and that's just signs of them being "confident" and "competitive" but if a black QB were to say the same things it would be labeled as "arrogant" and "immature".

A white QB could wear towels on his head and "sulk" during press conferences as much as he wants and it would be characterized as evidence of how focused and driven he is.

Prior to 2011 I would've told you this double-standard didn't exist, but having Cam as our QB has opened my eyes.

I also never fully realized how much of a narrative the media likes to create about a guy until Cam came around. They cast him as a "heel" (to borrow a pro wrestling term) and then all the stories about him were spun to reinforce that image, because everyone loves to hate a good villain.

I can't even begin to imagine what it's like to be 22 years old and in the the position of being cast as the villain by all the national sports media. I know Cam handled it much better than most of us would have, so that's just more evidence of what a quality young man he really is.

Cam is better and younger than Andrew Luck
