Not necessarily, you could apply the franchise tag if you weren't able to work something out.

Yeah, and we have to decide whether or not to exercise it THIS off-season. If they can't reach an agreement on a long-term extension in the next couple months, they'll likely activate the option to be safe. Though, under no circumstance should we actually let him play that fifth year, otherwise he'd be an unrestricted FA.
