Joe Person late round option for Panthers.

I hate Joe Person as much as anyone else...but the suggestion that we'll draft a late QB isn't outlandish.  In fact, it makes quite a bit of sense.  A guy like Derek Anderson costs around a million dollars a year, while a late round rookie pick is in the 400,000 range.  That's 600,000 to devote to a free agent in a cash strapped year.

Also, let's be honest...if something happens to Cam Newton, a guy like Derek Anderson isn't going to take over an be a superstar.  With an upside rookie like Boyd, you'd at least have that chance.  If it fails, there's always a veteran QB waiting for a phone call.

Any thing that anybody is saying right now is speculation at best given how early we are in the process.  So Person's guess is as good as another.  It makes sense that you could consider a guy like Boyd as a 7th rounder given his athletic talent although not close to Cam's.  And you can go a hundred other directions as well.  I wonder if teams will want to draft him as a quarterback or as something else.

A QB draft pick would be unacceptable in my opinion. Cam is like the least injury prone player in the league, definitely the least at QB. And with all our needs in the secondary, o-line and receiver, in the late rounds we could definitely get depth. Especially with G-man's and Rivera's history in the late rounds. There are a lot of QBs in FA in the rare case that we don't keep Anderson.

IF (Big IF) we can't resign Anderson, there are a ton of options at QB. I would rather have a relative proven QB like Matt Cassel or David Garrard over a rookie QB anyway. There is no way we waste a draft pick on a QB in this draft, when we have as many holes as we do. Furthermore, I doubt Boyd will drop past the 3rd/4th round anyway.

a lot of people on here are acting like a 6th round pick will spent on a future hall of famer rather than a career back up. If we draft a dude in the 5-7th round and he ends up sticking with the team, even as a backup, for 5 years, that's a successful draft pick. Not every late pick is hardy or Captain.
