Draft Questions, Answers starting this weekend

stirs

Recommended Posts

There are many smokescreens and prognostications out at the same time.  Questions remain.

Are there any QBs worthy of the first pick?

Will teams go back to more of a standard thought process when drafting QB's after the Ponder, Locker, Gabbert screw ups in the last few years?  Bridgewater weigh in and measurements will be huge for him.  Small hands?

If QB's drop, will the skill positions and BPA's like Watkins, Clowney, and Robinson, go early?

Will St Louis take an OT in the first when Fischer has never drafted an OLineman in the first round in his career?

Who will be the guy from nowhere a few months ago to a top 10 pick?  Robinson is the guy currently.

Will there be movement/trades near the top of the first round or near the middle/end due to guys falling?

One of the best weekends for draft nuts coming up and someone will have the guys saying "are you kidding me" a lot, sort of like Dontari Poe did a few years back.  Who will be the guy that wows people this year?

I think the following: (at this point)

QB class   Weak

RB class   Weak

TE class  Good

WR class  Excellent

OT  class Excellent

G   Class Weak

C  Class Good

DT Class Good

DE Class Weak

LB Class Good

DB Class Excellent

S Class Weak

Good year for the Panthers to be drafting.

Panther questions:

If there is a good OT who falls, NO is right in front of us to ****** them.  Would it be a good move to go from 28 to 26, and what would be the cost?

Would it be good to trade back into the second and get an add'l pick or two, especially with the WR's, OT's and CB's being deep?

If Clowney goes to Houston, will Oakland, Jax, Atlanta and Minny reach for a DE ?  Gman will need to figure this one out before FA starts.

Are 1st round DB's typically the press corner guys?  We run zone, so are we wasting their ability and a pick by going after them?

Gman was head of player personnel with the Giants from 1999 to 2012.

In those 14 drafts, if you look at the first three rounds, he had a total of 40 picks and Olineman made up only 4 of them.

Not a great omen for an OT early.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft?teamId=3410&type=team

1st 3 rounds 40 picks

4 OLineman

9 DB's

9 DLineman

13 WR/TE

Looks like WR/TE or DB will get the call early

giving what DG said, just sit back and take BPA at our pick.i think the cost would be like a 3rd or 4th round pick just to move up a couple of spots.DG also said last year, that you can talk yourself out of a good player, if you listen to the phone class etc.....

i think they where looking at the future(this draft) saying if we can get by with these mid round FAs until next year, we can address some major needs in the upcoming draft, even with drafting BPA. scouts only watch seniors and jrs but other guys jump off tape while breaking those guys down. i know scouts sit back and wait on some guys to enter, so hopefully ours did this.

1st round DBs should be able to play press, off man, and zone coverages. since we do run a zone scheme, i think we can get by with 2nd or later round CB, unless one of the top guys grades out as a cant miss prospect, then you have to take him at 1 if he is there.

I think Bridgewater and Manziel are worth the first pick. But if I was the Texans I would take Jake Matthews, this guy will be the next great offensive tackle in the league, very unlikely that happens though.

They both have big question marks.

Both are smallish, Manziel has the "what the hell" factor off the field going for him and Bridgewaters hands are rumored to be very small.

There are definitely red flags, for the top pick anyway.  I would be afraid I was getting the next Gabbert, Locker, etc and using the top pick to do it.

Just playing devils advocate here

I can definitely see your point, Johnny's size actually doesn't worry me. He is bigger than Russell Wilson and very good at avoiding tackles. Teddy on the other hand has no muscle on him and of course has small hands which is why he needs to wear gloves so he can get a better zip on the ball. Gabbert had way more issues than these two, from the very beginning Gabbert was a project that got overhyped, I think these two are legit.

That, alone, is enough for me to be hesitant about Manziel. Cosell is highly regarded as a very good talent evaluator, and someone who really has a pulse on prospects. The only other analysis I'd be interested to see would be Gil Brandt and Mayock.

NFL Films' Greg Cosell believes if an evaluator only watched Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel's games against Missouri and LSU, "you'd rate him almost undraftable."
LSU defenders previously stated the employed a "mush rush" tactic when facing Manziel, meaning keep gap and lane discipline while constricting the pocket. With that said, teams that consider drafting Manziel will watch every single one of his collegiate games and pinpoint where he wins and where he loses. That can be said for every top quarterback prospect.

Stay put, keep our other assets and let those sobs do whatever. We are perfectly positioned ahead of TE needy NE, Seattle, ATL, and TB at the top of the 2nd to get the next Jimmy Graham light (Amaro) or Gronk 2.0 (ASJ).

After looking at Gmans record of drafting, I doubt we take an OT in the first, much less trade up to get him.

I actually think OT is exactly what we will take...at least if one is there.  I think everyone realizes Bell is not a legitimate starter, and Gross is on his way out (though I do expect him to re-sign for another year).  So the need for OT is beyond urgent.  My guess is that Matthews, Robinson, Lewan, Kouandjio, and Martin will all be gone by our pick, but Moses and/or Richardson will probably be there, and I am expecting one of them to be our pick (probably Moses, IMO).

The receiver class is so strong that we can still get a legitimate starter in the 2nd, while it's much more questionable if we can get a day one starter at OT that late in the 2nd.

Of course if we are able to bring in a starter at OT in FA, then WR likely moves up to #1.  But obviously that would mean letting Hardy go.  And once FA starts we would have to move very quickly on any big signing to beat out the competition, so any hopes for a tag and trade would be non-existent since there is no way we could keep both Hardy's tag and the new OT's cap number on the books.

Unless we tag and Trade Hardy well before the draft?  Guess all that will sort out in early March

Tagging and trading Hardy is a pipe dream. I'd say the chances of it happening are 0.1%
