If the NFL keeps going the way it is, I see these average team weight numbers going down and down.

 

It seems to me that the NFL is moving more towards speed and quickness, which is why average team weights are on the decline. If the game goes back to more of ground and pound system, you will surely see that weight got up.

 

I also wonder if the NFL has had a hand in affecting these latest figures in time? It's just odd that with so many linemen retiring in horrible condition because of the physical strain their weight has put on their body, that the NFL is trying to prepare themselves to not catch flak for it.

 

I know many fans think the NFL should ignore issues like player weight, concussions, etc and all those arguments are silly but you get sued once or twice and you catch on real quick. I can see a former player being told that he was forced to add weight to keep his job and how that weight ruined him. I'm not saying I agree it's worth a lawsuit but that is another conversation all together. I'm just saying I wouldn't be surprised if a few guys in suits in New York City are looking at all the fat players, thinking about lawyers and suggesting changes.
