Munnerlyn's agent meeting with Panthers next week

Captain gets unfairly criticized because of the middling conversion % against him, but that overlooks the many snaps in which he covers his guy well enough the quarterback doesn't target him. The first rule of playing corner is to make the QB hold the ball; if you're constantly being targeted you're not doing your job.

Not a fan of cap but if he has better quality around him, one, he doesn't play outside corner and two, his diffiencies aren't so much on show bcos of the talent around him. He's a good depth player elsewhere it's not really his fault panthers have little talent to support him.

because i'm lazy, copy and paste from another thread about capt.

i'm predicting a deal will be done....3 years, $2.5-3mil/year with $2mil signing bonus

same type deal will be done for mitchell as well.

both guys produced big for us last year and provided a lot of fire on the field. i think it's a respectable offer, esp. considering the market will be just as or more crowded as last year.

I'd definitely take that.

We need a corner better than Munnerlyn, but that doesn't mean he's bad, and it doesn't mean we don't do what we can to keep him.  A guy like Munnerlyn, and an upgrade across from him, makes this a better defense.

don't try to replace him. try to build around him.

if you want to upgrade cb....look at the weakest links and go from there. that ain't captain.

I'm surprised no one is talking about the Panther's having not contacted a single free agent player or agent.

"It's been real quiet, which is shocking. I don't know what's going on. I'm just waiting. I guess they're going to let everyone hit free agency," Munnerlyn told The Charlotte Observer's Joseph Person on Friday. "I don't think they've talked to anybody, yet -- not even Greg Hardy. That's a shocker to me. I guess they're going to see what the market value of people is and go from there."

This is going to be an interesting off season now that D. Gettleman has had an entire year to evaluate the team's talent.

Does a lack of activity to retain our free agents up to this point indicate Gettleman has determined that there are numerous opportunities to improve the level of talent on this team?

I think it shows that DG is going to be as cheap as possible in filling out the team and relying on rookies and low tier FA pick ups. If anyone wants more then 1-2, maybe 3 million a season, they likely won't be back.

You could be right.  On the other hand, the Panther's stock as a desirable destination for free agents is probably at an all time high.  That affords DG the opportunity to play hardball, where as Marty Hurney needed to constantly throw money at players in hopes that they would stay with an underachieving organization.

This is interesting. Gettleman played hard ball with Dwan Edwards and Munnerlyn last offseason and won. He might try to do the same again this year w/our free agents.

He will be. I am trying to rationalize it.  Here is what I think:

Gettlemen might know the personnel around the league better than anyone--the guy seems very aware.  He also has a good eye for talent.  While he may like Munnerlyn, he knows that he is nothing special in the grand scheme of things.  Gettlemen is like a Mafia overlord--its just business.  Emotion has nothing to do with it.  I LOVE his attitude.  Compare that to Hurney who thought he was Santa rewarding the Core of a 2-14 team.  Remember when he had to cut Jake (after making him very rich)?  He flew to Chicago to cry on his agent's shoulder.  I knew he was done when I read that.

Gettlemen did some pretty awesome bottom fishing last year.  He really has no chioice.  I seriously think Gettlemen is going to reward the core with decent contracts, but players who had a good year are not going to be given a Brink's truck.

    • It's not good to leave any netminder having a bad night out there, not fair to them, not fair to the skaters still trying to win the game It's classless and shows a lack of respect, for them has a player and a human being, you aren't gaining anything, you aren't learning anything , except they just don't have it that night. I don't care if it's a multiple Vezina Winner, or a 3rd string back up, don't leave them out there to shame themselves and the rest of the team  What if Lavi left Cam in when he didn't have it, and Rod had to skate knowing he essentially has an open net at his end of the ice, would he enjoy that ?
    • If they draft Stewart at 8th, I will ask @Mr. Scot for a list of GMs and might as well ask for HC too.....
    • I can't for the life of me figure out what people are seeing in Stewart on tape. If he can't just simply run around or through the OL in front of him, he's cooked. I don't see any actual moves. If he doesn't win on sheet athleticism at the point of contact he's nullified. I don't know if I've ever seen him actually beat a block once engaged. Then, even if he just blasts right past or through the OL and has a clean path to the ball it's like he's blind. He can't find the ball. He's like a bottle rocket. Yeah, he takes off fast but he's just going to go fast in a general direction. There will be no course correction. I watched quite a bit on him just because of his perceived draft evaluation and because of the wild discrepancy between measurables and production. Watch him play and it all makes since. He's a god tier physical specimen who just happens to be playing football. I don't see a football player. People need to stop falling in love with the potential and start realizing why the potential isn't translating.
