Newton tied with Brees

He's not good at reading defenses? How is this accurate? I would like you to explain unless you are just an idiot.

I'm going to go ahead and backtrack on that comment, I skimmed over that first line so I guess you are right, I am an idiot. Cam CAN read defenses, Much better than people give him credit for. I will say I agree with everything else this guy said. He is an elite athlete, he picks up a bunch of first downs with his legs, but he does hold on to the ball too long and he can be erratic with his throws. When he is on target, it's glorious but when he whiffs, my god does he whiff terribly.

Put away your pitchforks huddle, I misread the quote.

Brady has a better O-Line so he has the luxury of holding onto the ball longer than most QBs. When you have swiss cheese on the right side, you need to get it out quicker.

Brady also big, young, fast, athletic receivers in Amendola, Thompkins and Dobson.  Then he's got Gronk.  Then he's got Vereen out of the backfield.

Most elite quarterbacks that are considered better than Cam right now either have a better Oline, better weapons or both.

Smitty doesn't break on quick routes as quickly as he used to.  LaFell can't beat press coverage, and will drop the ball when he does.  Ginn needs space to be effective.  Our best receiver out of the backfield is nicknamed Tub of Goo/Dumptruck.

The only guy Cam has a legit shot of firing the ball out to in a quick pinch is Olsen.  While he is a great player, he doesn't exactly qualify as elite and teams give him extra attention when they plan to put Newton under pressure.

We don't exactly have a threatening run game either.

Overall, I firmly believe we will see much better play from Newton if we improve the pieces around him.  Every "elite" QB in this league has a better supporting cast than Newton.

Even if you firmly disagree with everything I said and still think he's prone to holding the ball too long, then we need to get Cam a Patriots' quality line.  Cam has proven that with adequate time in the pocket, he will absolutely carve a defense into turkey giblets.  You build around a franchise quarterback, and even if Cam needs more time then normal, we need to find ways to give him that time. Despite how good Rodgers, Brees, Manning and Brady are, they all play in drastically different offenses because they all have their own unique strengths and weaknesses.  Their coaches and GMs have built offenses to highlight their strengths and minimize their weaknesses, we need to do the same to see Cam's true potential.

Absolutely right, and I'm a bit worried with Shula since I don't think he's the right guy to build an offense around Cam. We'll see when he gets some weapons though.

I doubt shula has much say in personnel.  I'm actually fine with the Shula offense philosophically.  As vanilla as it is it was extremely efficient for most of the season.  Imagine if we had a running back able to occasionally turn those 1 yard runs into 8, 20, 30 yarders or bring it to the house.  What if we had receivers who had reliable hands and could actually get some YAC?

Theoretically I feel a "standard" offense is ideal for Cam.  Physically, Cam is basically a better version of Roethlisberger.  Best situations for Cam are ones where he can extend plays so the defense breaks down or he can take off to move the chains.

The only thing I didn't understand was in the playoffs why we didn't send Cam over the top in the goal line situations.  I get that it risks his health, but we are willing to do it in the regular season, so why not in a do or die situation?

To be honest, I think much of this problem will go away with better protection.  If he has consistent time, I think he will be more comfortable in the pocket and will be able to better step into his throws, giving him more accuracy.  Now I don't think he'll ever be Drew Brees or Peyton Manning accurate, but few QB's in the history of the NFL have been that accurate.  But I do think he has the ability to consistently get the ball in the right spot for his receivers, he just needs to keep working and develop a better comfort level and trust in the pocket.

As for holding the ball too long, that's a problem any play making QB is going to have.  It's what allows him to be so dangerous with his legs.  If he got rid of the ball quickly like Brees and Manning do, then he would never see many of the opportunities to make running plays.  The thing is that he just needs a line that can give him an extra second or two than what he gets now.  Nothing outrageous, the line just needs to hold the defense up a bit.
