Panthers-Phins comparison. Hmmm, we are a model now.

        I just found this piece by Joe Scumaci (apparently a Charlottonian, or whatever you call yourselves, and Dolphins fan) that drew parallels between what the Panthers did this past season, and how the Phins could be one step behind. I just found it a little interesting, and was feeling that Panther pride as I perused through the piece. We may be the Hawks little brother right now, but could be the Phins big brother.  It just made me smile a little bit, is all.

 

The Panthers and Dolphins have both replaced their much maligned ex-general managers with guys who came to their new teams with a personnel background and have been a part of a successful Super Bowl winning team at some point.

 

 

 

There were many questions about whether Rivera was cut out to be a head coach and as Dolphins fans know, those same questions still remain with Philbin.

 

 

 

Both guys have very similar backgrounds, as Newton only played one year of major college football at Auburn, while Tannehill entered Texas A&M as a wide receiver and was eventually converted to a quarterback the latter half of his collegiate career.

 

 

So while Tannehill and Newton may be entering their 3rd and 4th years as professional quarterbacks respectively, they both don’t have more than 5 good seasons as big-time signal callers...Newton saw his win totals increase from 6 to 7 to 12 over his short career. Hopefully their similar backgrounds in experience helps Tannehill improve on that 8 win total in 2014.               

 

 

 

 

 Gettleman stepped in and takes his first draft as General Manager deep to center field for a grand slam. He brought the “Giants way” to Carolina by selecting defensive tackles Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short in the first and second rounds. Both guys were slam dunks and helped anchor a defense that went from 23rd in 2012 and the weakness of the team to 2nd overall in 2013 and the team’s strength.

 

Now, the Panthers have a player named Luke Kuechly who just won Defensive Player of the Year in his second season in the NFL and the Dolphin’s entire line backing core couldn’t shine Kuechly’s shoes. But that doesn’t mean Miami can’t get better against the run and improve on that underachieving 25th run defense from 2013. 

 

                                                                                   

 

 

Now, to be honest, once I found out (@jscum13) lived in Charlotte, I was suspicious that maybe he was stretching the comparisons to pigeonhole his favorite team into the mold of the local team, but to be fair there are some general comparisons. I just think it's cool that the guy is giving the Panthers some props. Even after the season we had, in some ways people are still looking at the Panthers' achievement as more of an anomaly than the recipe for sustained success. Scumaci sounds like he knows what's up.

This piece was written in no means to say the Dolphins will be 12-4 next season and the defense will vault all the way into the top five, but it was intended to show the comparison between two franchises that have taken similar paths. From the firing to hiring of successful personnel directors to lead as general managers to struggling coaches looking to turn around an organization, Miami should emulate the way Carolina has gone about business recently and hopefully they will see the gains the Panthers did in 2013.

Phins are looking to trend upwards. Much like our franchise. Homerism aside, I believe we are a bit further along than they are. They aren't that far away though.

there were a whole lot of contributing factors to the success but most surrounds the type guys we have on the team. they have two big qualities...they don't quit and they aren't assholes. they fight, but they fight together.

I don't see it, not at all.

Philbin is on his way out soon, I don't think he's a very good head coach. The way he handled that whole Martin/Incognito mess only cemented concerns about his abilities.

Not to mention trading away Brandon Marshall was unbelievably dumb.

Yeah, i got to give you props on that one. I could be naive, because I just don't know, but I don't think that there is any way that a Rivera-lead team put together by G-man, owned by J-Rich, with the bunch of stand-up guys that we have would ever allow a great big prick to "run things". The Panthers' whole culture just seems more edifying in the mode of true teaching and mentoring than trying to bully or embarrass someone into "toughening up", or using these kinds of tactics to ostensibly bring out a player's best.  The Panthers locker room is probably more of a family type atmosphere that thrives on everyone giving 100 percent because they genuinely want to do their part to help everyone succeed.

Besides, the Panthers haven't had half a dozen different head coaches in the last decade.

 

The comparison isn't about going back in ancient history.  Hickey has just come on as the new GM. The point is that the writer sees some general comparisons, and hopes that the Dolphins will try and do this off season what we did last off season, and get similar results once the 2014 regular season rolls along that we had in the 2013 season.
