This story and the resulting independent investigation started months before anybody ever heard of Michael Sam.

The only tie in to M. Sam himself is the timing of the release of the report. And it is likely coincidence. Who knows.

 

The tie in is that the NFL and Goodell knows that very soon the NFL will be an organization where it is perfectly acceptable to be an outed gay man. Didn't need M. Sam to point that out though he probably accelerated the whole issue. And the current locker room and risk management atmosphere isn't geared for that. To avoid litigation it needs to be changed.

Nobody would give two shits about this mediocre player if he didn't make racist comments. None of these people who are like "Hmmm maybe we should sign him, i'm sure he's misunderstood" would even know who he was otherwise.
