You think Hardy saw Michael Bennett's remarks on a "discount"?

Michael Bennett pretty much summed up the way I believe that most NFL players think about their contract negotiations. Of course he is a Super Bowl champion, so I guess that may figure into the mix somewhere in an NFL player's thinking---good or bad, but basically they want to get paid.  Put it this way: What Bennett is saying per (NFL.com), and G-man's philosophy are somewhat at odds with one another (that's why signing good values to mid to long term contracts is so important).

 

"There is no such thing as discount," Bennett said on NFL Network's "NFL Total Access" Tuesday night. "This isn't Costco, this isn't Walmart, this is real life."

 

 

"There is no discount really because you go out there and you don't give a discount on effort," he said. "You go out there and you give the best effort every day and you fight for your teammates, and you want to be compensated for the way that you perform and the kind of teammate you are."

"It's definitely a business," he said. "People hate to say it's that, but it is what it is. I would love to play for the Seahawks, but they're going to have to want me back and the numbers are going to have to be right."

I would say 99% chance we don't resign him, but I wouldn't be shocked if we franchise him.

The more time that goes on the more comfortable I am with the Panthers letting Hardy walk.  This is exactly the kind of thing that set the Panthers back in the past.  Deangelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, Jon Beason, Charles Godfrey...countless other HUGE contracts handed out by the previous GM.  While they looked good at the time, all it takes is one injury to completely wreck a players career.  Or they might just not perform as well after getting that huge contract because they have nothing left to prove.  Could definitely see Hardy being one of those players based on how much he talks about getting paid.

 

I'm not saying Hardy isn't a good player, because he is.  But he did get 10 out of his 15 sacks in three games against pretty poor competition.  Hell, watch Greg Hardy get a massive deal then watch him blow out his ACL in training camp.  It's not worth it.  With all the young guys coming up the pipe and the inevitable availability of older veteran pass rushers that will be cut and come cheap (Justin Tuck?  Jared Allen?), keeping Hardy at the expense of the rest of the team just isn't worth it.  Gettleman is a smart guy, and he knows when to cut 'em loose and when to keep 'em.  He'll cut Hardy loose and let the Raiders sign him to huge money and use the money he would have spent on Hardy to build the team up even stronger than last year.

we need to be able to let go of this idea or at least understand that even if we don't trade hardy for something that the team will still be benefitting from letting him walk as opposed to signing him to some big contract.

 

if we let him walk we'll be having enough cap space to help keep a more important player or two and some money to improve in other areas, plus we'll be getting a comp. pick. sure, it's basically an early 4th rounder, but still if that's all that we can pull off then we have to be fine with it.

 

we can't force anyone to trade with us. we can't force hardy to agree to go to a place that wants to trade with us. if we do want to get more than what i listed above, we can't afford to be too greedy and we will have to accept that we may have to settle for something that may be far less than what we think he's worth...and that means maybe an actual second or third round pick.

 

is he worth a couple first rounders? sure...but no one is going to pay that for him.

Yeh difference is this kid Bennett played hard every game all season and didn't disappear in a play off game! No he won a ring playing hard To the end, whereas hardy he needed to step up and didn't, Hardy registered half of his sacks against the leagues worst Oline (failcons) and a rookie starting LT (Armstead).

Sick of this comparison BS, hardy wants to get paid bcos he has douchebag Drew Rosenhaus blowing smoke up his ass, if hardy goes anywhere I doubt he wins bcos he won't play within a scheme and personnel that suits him like he has at carolina (don't underestimate that) Two seasons yeh impressive stats but lets not get carried away by his performances against lesser opponents, would I like to keep him yes, but for it to hinder my team id rather not sign him.

I have enough faith we can be a good defense without him.  I just hope he remembers that the Panthers organization are the ones that even made it possible for him to make this money he seeks.  We drafted him.  We developed him.  We dealt with his dumb motorcycle accident.  We started him.  We put players in place that let him take advantage of his talents.  As we will do for the next guy when he leaves.  If anyone should have a degree of a loyalty it should be a 7th rounder who got every opportunity to show his stuff.

I don't think many people are expecting Hardy to take any kind of discount to play here.

I've already accepted the likelihood that he won't be a Panther this season.

Two ideas of thought. Do I want to be the best or do I want money. There is a player at every position that gets paid the most, and most of the time that player is on a bad team. Being selfish has its rewards but it also has its down falls. I really dont care if Hardy stays or goes, he is one piece to a big puzzle. If we sign Hardy to a huge contract next year and he breaks his leg then we are still without him.  Bennett seems like a selfish asshole to me, if he underperforms to his contract does he give that money back? Or what if he gets injured for two years of his contract? Will he give back half that money or more? Hell no he will not do any of that. So why should teams pay him a premium price when he did nothing more than take advantage of a good team.
