Works all ways. Here it's HOW-STIN (Houston) street, not HEW-STUN. Here, it's the DEE-COB (DeKalb) subway station, not DEE-CAB.

 

Also, in MS, it's BUH-LUX-EE (Biloxi), not BI-LOCKS-EE.

 

In, KY, it's LOU-VULL (Louisville), not LOUIEVILLE.

 

And of course, it's NEW ORLINS, or NAW-LINS. Not New OR-LEANS.

 

And my fave, Worcester, MA. It's not WAR-CHESS-TER or WAR-CESS-TER. It's WOO-STAH.

The one that gets me is Beaufort.

In NC it's BOW-FERT but in SC it's BYOO-FERT

It's Whis-tah by the way. I grew up 45 minutes away. They have their own Bostonish dialect, like the Tennessee accent vs the more generic southern accent.
