Breakdown of Hardy's play in 2013

Guessing you didn't read the article

I did. Though I should've specified that judging a players pass rush prowess should not be judged on 15 plays. The writer makes a quick mention of his pressures.

But when he spends two paragraphs in analyzing Hardy's pass rush he only uses his sacks totals, nothing else.

Which makes no sense. Hardy has had hundreds of pass rush starts and yet he is using 15 plays to determine how good he is in that area? What about the amount of pressure against the tackles/ guards? , the Qb hits? His total pass rush average, his total run stop average?

I agree a sack is a sack at the end of the day and you can't take away sacks just because they happened against whoever. But when you factor in the money he will command, the amount of needs this team has, the amount of free agents this team needs to sign and the amount of cap space we have, re signing Hardy doesn't out weigh all those things. Good teams know when to let players walk and sell high. Signing Hardy would hurt us long term with guys like Cam and Keek needing new contracts in the coming years. Good teams draft well and trading Hardy for picks would put us in a great position to fill some of our needs for cheap.

Trust me man, I know; and I agree with you there. My problem is some people just can't simply state that we don't have the money to re-sign him without throwing him under the bus calling him overrated, a product of our d-line, a greedy SOB, and saying he didn't show up in the biggest game of the year when he still performed better than anyone around him.

Hardy is my favorite player and I can still look at the situation objectively and say that we're probably better off letting him go. But we shouldn't drag his character and reputation through the mud in the process...

Hardy picked a bad day to have a bad day, but it's reality. No logical person should expect him to dominate against Staley or any other truly elite tackle. But when the best go against the best, on the biggest stage, when they demand big $$$, they should at least duel the Staley's of the world to a draw, a stalemate, at the worst. That didn't happen and it's just not good enough! IMO.

wait...so it's hardy's fault every left tackle he lined up against wasn't a pro bowler?

most elite pass rushers abuse the weakest opponent the most.

that's what they're supposed to do.

I'm not sure what fault has to do with the discussion. It is certainly relevant to the discussion of whether or not he should be paid for being elite.

I'm totally on board with that article. I was told I was insane at the end of the post season when I suggested Hardy was riding one pretty good year.

Do I want him to remain with the Panthers? Absolutely. But I don't want him to suck the last little bit of cap we have. Franchise and hope a team takes the bait and we get more draft picks. Otherwise, we get one more year outta him. I don't think he deserves millions upon millions. He knows this is his (most likely) best shot at cashing in. He is doing what is smart. But he isn't worth it in the end.

Read the article. Neutralized for the most part in seven games against Staley (x2), Solder, Okung, Glenn, Kalil, D'Brickashaw.

Hardy is a special talent, I absolutely want him back. However, (unless we slap the tag on him) he's walking, and for good reason. It just doesn't make sense for us right now, acquiring picks for him would be my dream scenario. Also, I have always said, I think we still generate a solid pass rush with our rotation of DE's in Alexander, Horton, Addison.

I love Hardy but I feel it's mostly because of his persona.   I have to take a step back and look at the facts.  Hurney left us with a mess and we're in a cap situation with a TON of people to resign or replace.  Hardy is good, but the article paints a very good picture as to why he may not be worth the price he'll want.  That price may be worth it to a team with ZERO pass rush, but we have CJ and a decent rotation of guys on the other end.   We also have some other holes that that many could be used for that IMO, was more important last year.

If we can use the money to get a WR in here and maybe secondary help, to me that is worth more than Hardy, TO THIS TEAM.  To another team, it may be different.  It is possible we can even sign a vet to come in to play with those rotation guys (Peppers maybe?, if cheap only).

I really think franchising and trading for picks is the best bet here.  We have needs, and if we can fill those needs with cheap rookie contracts, that'll be the best bet for us right now.  We have to get over the RB's that are killing us now, and in order to do that AND stay competitive choices like this have to be made.  The offense needs some help if we want to get over the hump to elite status.  If we give up some defense and use the money for a big help on offense, it'll be worth it.  But I'm not sure we'll really suffer.

Make no doubt about it, Hardy is a stud and will only get better. If we didn't already have CJ, paying Hardy would be a no brainer. If us fans want to beat up Hardy to make ourselves feel better, have at it, but Hardy will be a top 10 rusher for the next several years.
