working from home...

I am a finance manager and pretty much anything I do in the office, I can do from home. I work from home a day or two a week because I have a 100+ mile commute each day so I waste a couple hours a day driving when I could be getting work done. Working from home is ok and it has it's pros and cons, but I prefer the social interaction at the office most days.

In the summer I tend to work from home more because my daughter is out of school and on the days I have her I can work out by the pool while she swims with her friends. I am fortunate to have a job that allows me to to do that and spend as much time with her as I do.

I can get work done at home, but I can't make money at home.

Gotta be in front of people for me to "make" money, the stuff that I can do from home is trying to set up those face to face meetings.

Friend of mine just started working from home, and she seems to be going a little crazy not having the social interaction.

1-2x a week, and since we have a home office, I feel like I get a lot more done during the day depending on what needs to be done.  If I have to sit down and write a proposal, grant, manuscript, etc. it is easier to do it at home instead of closing the office door since that hasn't stopped anyone in any work place, ever.

This is where I am as well, except I have to be in the office on Monday morning for meetings. If I'm not there I'll be on the road because I don't accomplish as much sitting behind the desk.

I need to have the social interaction as well. Hell, been home alone for the last 7 months before I got back to work, last thing I want to do is sit around the house some more...

  • 2 months later...

I just got in another traffic accident this morning (rear-ended; not my fault). Second since Jan 1. I just can't stand commuting anymore. I'm about to tell my boss I can do my job 100% from home, and start working from home on my laptop. My job isn't worth risking my life for, and living in DC, I'm honestly taking my life in my hands every time I drive to work. In the age of the Internet, the home office should be the default for most office jobs.

I theoretically could do my job from anywhere since it is all web based.

I don't like working at home though. I only work a mile from home, so I'd much rather go in and interact with my coworkers than sit at home by myself.

We worked from home during the DNC to avoid dealing with the closed roads, and I liked it for a day. The rest of the time was pretty boring.

With Scrum

If I need to bang through a response, rfp, presentation then home is the best place.

I like the social interaction...

I worked from home for several years and will still do it if I need to be home for some reason (cable guys 15 hour window) but my preference is the office
