Kelvin Benjamin interview on WFNZ

Hopefully the combine, pro day and individual workouts will shake some guys out and give a clearer picture as to which WR fits our needs. For me, it comes down to Benjamin, Robinson, Matthews, or Landry if we decide to go WR at 28. Benjamin was the guy I wanted all season as he stood our at FSU, but was technically behind Green as thee top WR on that Seminole squad. Benjamin was stellar in HS but was thought of as too raw to make this quick of an impact. He blew my mind in a ton of games and is the kind of WR that Cam needs as a target, as well as a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. My biggest question is if Benjamin has more Stephen Hill in him (minus the speed) or more Calvin Johnson. Stephen Hill is a frustrating player because he has all of he measurables and 4.3 speed, but his flaws coming out were route running and questionable hands.

Actually 6'5" guys do grow on trees in this draft.

I personally like Martavis Bryant of Clemson who was overshadowed by Sammy Watkins.

You can get Bryant in the 3rd round, but if you watch his game it resembles a young Steve Smith. Imagine Steve Smith 6'5" and 200 lbs. Bryant competes for the ball when it is in the air, plays extremely physical/nasty, has great body control, has good hands, has an imposing stiff arm and attacks with his first step after the catch. All his weaknesses can be coached up.

Another late gem who will likely be overlooked is Brandon Coleman of Rutgers.

I say trade down the first round pick in the draft. Pick one of the Tight Ends and Offensive Tackles who fall into the second round. Then grab Martavis in the 3rd round and Coleman in the 4th round. Finish by drafting a couple tall CBs as well as OT Billy Turner from North Dakota State with the final 3 picks.

JMO, but if we do want a stud TE, trading down certainly won't work with NE, Seattle, the falcons, and bucs wanting an elite TE too.

I'm definitely more comfortable with us getting a big receiver.

The question is should we get this big receiver?  Or are there better options?

(if so, who?)

You also have to look at that question in terms of whether or not there is a better option at another position when we're on the clock, and whether taking Benjamin at the exclusion of that pick is worth it, particularly when you can get perhaps better value overall (meaning between both players) by waiting to pick Coleman, Street, Moncrief, Bryant, or Latimer later on (who could ultimately eclipse Benjamin by themselves). Or, at least that would be my question.

Your TE idea is novel, but that would almost be like wasting the kid's reported talent, not ever really seeing that purported upside.

I am interested in knowing if others are as uncomfortable as I am in drafting a big WR--in college, they tend to dominate, but in the pros, it seems many bust.  Maybe I am basing this on one or two.

Here is another question:  What is the difference between Benjamin in the first and Brandon Coleman in the third or later?  Coleman was the focus of the offense on a pretty bad team with a pretty bad QB.  At FSU, they had a good qb and other options.  Coleman is a little better route runner and I think his hands are better.   With Benjamin, you do not get double moves, you get slow breaks on out routes.  You can throw slants and deep balls to him.  I do not like guys with questionable hands running slant routes.  That leads to 6 points the other way.

I dunno.

I still like Odell Beckham better, and that could be some severly flawed thinking.  I like the precision and hands of Abbrederis, and I really think Moncrief is underrated..

BUT I THINK WE ARE NOT IN THE MARKET FOR JUST A WR, we are in the market for # 1 WR.  That makes the most sense to me.

I'm beginning to lean that way as well. I was on the Jordan Matthews bandwagon, but it seems he may slide out of 1st round consideration. Beckham would be a good get at 28. Benjamin is a freak, but too raw for me. It could be 2015/2016 before he becomes the player we need right now.

Runs a full route tree, does a bit of everything. Seems like hell be a good receiver

"stephen hill's flaws coming out" were that he didnt run routes and wasnt asked to go and catch passes.

Benjamin has succesfully done both of these things.

Attention readers: not every physically gifted player is not a flaming moron who struggles to learn basic concepts of the game

"I MEAN OH SURE BENJAMIN IS GIFTED ATHLETICALLY BUT WE ALL KNOW THAT MEANS HE CANT UH... ROUTES AND STUFF."

Not sure if you're calling out my post personally, or if it's a blanket statement for people that say those specific things.  Hill coming out of GT was stuck in a triple-option offense so all that was primarily asked of him was to block, go long or use his speed as a decoy.  His stature and athleticism has not helped him in the NFL, and those negatives that were mentioned about him leading up to the draft, have been pretty spot on.  I think Benjamin's intermediate game and crispness coming off cuts, double moves, and drops is questionable.... not saying he won't succeed in the NFL, but it is a legitimate knock on him.  I'm a huge Benjamin fan and hope he succeeds and is catching TDs from Cam for the next 6-8 years.
